{HITCHED} Jennifer & Jon in Kansas City

Jennifer & Jon already bring to the table a too-perfect “how we met” story To read it, click on the link in their names to be taken to their engagement session blog post. but other elements of their relationship and their wedding day followed suit.

  • Let’s get the obvious out of the way. They are gorgeous. They come from gorgeous parents and have gorgeous siblings. After staring at their photos for so long while editing, it finally dawned on me whom Jennifer resembles. Remember Aunt Becky from Full House?:)
  • Jennifer works for a bridal gown designer, so she brought that into the wedding. She combined two dresses to make one, very unique stunning gown. And she also had the wedding dresses from the parents and grandparents on both sides of her and Jon’s family displayed at the reception. What a timeless exhibit!!!:)
  • Jon has a kickbutt job too… his company owns two racecars and he is hoping to become the driver for one of the cars soon!  It’s a dream for him. And possibly might have been the reason he didn’t mind watching THE BACHELORETTE this season with Jen since one of the main contenders was a racecar driver and the Bachelorette herself has ties to the racing world Jon is all-too familiar with.:)
  • Jen’s bridesmaids were all giggles and jokes. Some were family members, others friends. All of them were more than ready to help her with anything she needed–even if it required helping her cool down under two layers of dresses.
  • Hands down, this was my favorite father-seeing-daughter moment. Jennifer’s father is a handsome man, and he’s not too proud to tear up when emotion overtakes him. His openness was met with tears streaming down all the ladies’ faces… including mine!!!! No joke. And when Jen’s mom joined the group hug, I was a goner. I’m surprised I could even continue shooting.
  • The guys were all dashing gentlemen, ready to laugh at any moment. And they tore it up on the dancefloor later.
  • The three ringbearers weren’t just brothers–they were triplets! And within the set of 3 is a pair of identical twins. How crazy is that?! And how cute are they!?
  • The ceremony venue, Saint Xavier church in Kansas City, gave off a tinted lavender glow from the stained-glass windows that actually matched Jen & Jon’s wedding colors!!!
  • Jen & Jon were to drive to the reception venue in a classic car. I was about 10 cars behind them in the caravan. When they got to a busy intersection up the street from the final destination, the car stalled out. I was too far away in traffic with cars behind me and in front of me, so I am sooooo bummed I couldn’t hop out and get pictures of this sight, but… wedding party and guests got out and pushed the car out of the precarious spot on the street and into a parking lot. And to boot–the bride and groom only laughed about it!
When the couple and wedding party did arrive to the venue at Halbrook Country Club in Leawood, it was nearing dusk. But the dim light brought out the magical hues of lavender and pinks even more. Absolutely dreaminess…sigh!
Other than dinner, the fun took place outdoors under small white lanterns and in the magenta light of an awesome cover band: Private Stock.
  • The bride’s second look–removing the ballroom skirt and sporting some pink converse shoes and a different hairpiece/veil ensemble was just as classy. Does her sense of style know no bounds??
  • Despite the high humidity, and the threat of storms, everyone stayed jovial and rain-free. The glow of the party was so enchanting amid the darkness of the golf course.
  • Rachel Holt, my assistant, and I had many laughs with this group and many sighs with the beauty of the day. Jennifer wants to go into wedding planning someday and I’d say her own wedding is great fodder for her portfolio.

Jennifer & Jon– your family and friends are all lovely accoutrements for your lovely life that you’ve cemented this summer. From smiles to tears and awesome style to downright fun, your traditional affair with unconventional modern twists was AMAZING. THANK YOU for turning to me to document it!! (And a thank you to my girl, Jaime E., for introducing Jennifer to me two years ago!!!)

August.1. 2012 - 5:17 pm

Mary and Bob Exline - Jenn and Jon, the wedding was most spectacular! We were so happy to be there and to represent the many friends of Laura and Tim’s in Salina. The warmth of both families was very evident–how lucky you are to have such wonderful parents!! The pictures took us back to that wonderful time.

{Family} The F family…again. ;)

Maybe the F stands for FAVORITE. Because they really have become favorite clients of mine.  I have shot them twice in the past year, this being the third…and they have 3 more sessions scheduled in the next 9 months.:)

But beyond that, as I’ve noted in their previous shoots, I just really like them as people.:)And Laura found herself pregnant with their second daughter (Precious KATE!!)  about the same time I found out I was expecting. So we have further bonded with having kiddos only weeks apart. (I couldn’t do their newborn pics because alas, I was on my own maternity leave!!)

I’m an honest person, so I will say this was a challenging session in that it kept me on my toes, on the move. Adelyn, who in the past, has proven to be an angel of a model for me, has reached the age I warn/joke with parents about. The age that is nearly impossible to photograph. She didn’t disappoint us in that expectation. But with patient parents, a rather sunshiney baby sister, and a photographer who was bound determined to make it happen for such wonderful clients, we came away with some genuine keepers. I would like to point out too that two of the reasons I adore clients like the Fs are: they don’t define perfection as traditional family photos with all smiles, and secondly, Laura always emails me after they see their full gallery with her notes on what pics were their favorites. I love hearing that because it gets me to see the images through THEIR eyes, not just mine. Oddly enough, I agreed! (because seriously, so often my faves are rarely the client’s) .

Laura wrote….

Some of the ones we love:
- Kate in our sunroom.  Just beautiful.  All of the colors come alive against the light chair.
- The willow tree!  Such a gorgeous backdrop (and our tacky little blanket actually turned out pretty good!)
- The “airplane style” shots, as my sister called them.  An attempt to entertain and distract turned into awesome photos!
- The photos where Elmo made an appearance.  It makes me chuckle seeing Adelyn’s favorite little buddy in some of these shots.
- Adelyn crying at our front door.  Such a sad little face.
So with that… I hope you are equally as woo-ed by this family. This very real. Very fun. Very beautiful. Very loving. FAMILY.

Laura - Oh how these photos make me smile – and tear up (joyfully, of course) – every time I see them. Kate’s little furrowed brow in the photo on the area rug just cracks me up. And Adelyn with her finger in Kate’s mouth… “what you don’t want the pacifier? here, try this!” Lol. It’s a wonderful thing knowing that 10/20/50 (pick a #) years from now I will probably still look back on these photos and tear up. And you will have played a key role in that. You’re the best!

{Hitched} McKenzie & Matt (Lake of the Ozarks)

Good golly. What is not to love about this wedding? Pretty much nothing. McKenzie & Matt kicked off their relationship over a decade ago!! Though it started as just friends and eventually roommates. I always say, one of the secrets to a happy marriage is finding the BEST roommate you can (and being attracted to said roommate, too. ha). Well, let’s just say… living together didn’t sway their friendship, though they did go their separate ways after graduating (from Mizzou! FINALLY some TIgers on the blog!!) But, in their words, after they reunited in 2007 in St. Louis: It didn’t take long for us to realize all our years of friendship laid a solid foundation for a pretty awesome relationship.

So now, 5 years later, and they are still chummy chums with a high dose of chemistry. They have fun, creative jobs (Matt’s a copywriter in the ad industry–he’s on the NASCAR campaign, how cool!) and McK works at a different advertising agency as an account exec. Needless to say, I was expecting a creative wedding. And a creative wedding is what I got. What’s to love about their getting-hitched affair?

  • McKenzie and I used to work at Ruby Tuesday together back in Columbia, Mo. So we go way back. And we’ve been witness to lots of drama together…the kind of drama that can only be unleashed at a restaurant in a college town.;)
  • McK & Matt are two of THE most sarcastic, witty people I know. McK has always been very blunt, but expects the same honesty. So being around her on her big day was a treat. There wasn’t a whole lot of wishy-washy compliments. The verbal praise was more crass, more entertaining and just as truthful. I giggled through out the day.
  • McK’s & Matt’s family was so much fun and GREAT sports. I mean, it was a HOT HOT HOT day…on the Lake of the Ozarks, yet all of them were as chipper and vibrant as box of crayons….before they melt. ha
  • Naturally, a bride and groom with such dynamic and playful personalities attract a cast of friends who can keep up with witty, high brow banter. They are that group of friends who is so funny and has such a way with words, that they can often be found quoting themselves or each other. I always thought they were quoting a movie I’d never seen with what sounded like clever screenwriting. But nope…it’s reality for them, folks.
  • The venue… Edgewater Estate…was glorious in a refreshing way. McK and her crew were quite fond of it, despite what she admits was rather 80s decor. Think: WEEKEND AT BERNIES. (Spot the white and black metallic jungle wallpaper below for a feel…) I couldn’t’ get enough of it and found it inspiring. The place was full of nooks and crannies. I got lost a few times. And who doesn’t love getting lost… in a house?!
  • They designed all the tangibles themselves. I always tell McK…she could quit her day job… and design invitations and such. Because she’s THAT good.
  • There were lots of personal touches throughout the day. Including a cameo by their furry, hilariously monikered friend, Ulysses S. Dog.
  • Their vows were heartfelt…and boats honked on and off during the readings…and the bride threw a few fist pumps and “woo hoos” out there.
  • Everyone was sweating. Let’s be honest. They were on a roof for a late-June ceremony, under full sun. But the mood wasn’t dented. People were genuinely happy to see these two crazy cats seal the deal.
  • The bridesmaid dresses were from the Gap, and they were jaw-dropping cool. The ties were fun, like a bag of Starburst. McK’s dress was a touch of woman, a touch of girl, and a lot of awesome.
  • I could probably make a good portion of this post pics of people being goofy.
  • The day exuded the adjectives that they use to describe one another: social, witty, spontaneous, silly, passionate and relaxed. So…mission accomplished.;)

M&M… Mallory (who was my fabulous sidekick for the day!!!) and I had so much fun capturing these images for you. Thank you…as a friend, as your photographer, I wish you a future worthy of cherishing. xoxo

{FAMILY} The O Family in Kansas City

A darling family I shot back in 2011 referred ANOTHER darling family my way.

Reasons I loved this family and this session:

  • Robin had little Miss Baylie just 6 months ago!! So she and I have bonded over the “new baby” thing.;)
  •  Matt & his siblings actually went to the same high school I did in Omaha, Nebraska. It’s always good to touch base with people familiar with my old stomping grounds.
  • Because of the family’s ties to Omaha…it seems they are dedicated Husker fans… In fact, Robin had Baylie early enough on a Husker game day that there was still time to get her cleaned up and ready to  eat pizza and drink beer in the hospital room before kickoff.
  • They even have named their dog after the best Husker coach ever… Osborne.;)
  • Baylie has a big brother. I love that dynamic.
  • Gage, the big brother (4.5 years old!!), is called Pumpkin; Baylie is dubbed, “Sweetpea.” Robin & Matt find this amusing since Robin HATES vegetables.
  • Gage was a great direction-follower. It wasn’t hard to get the “perfect” family photo…but some of my faves were the ones that stepped away from traditional.
  • This family is all about compromise. Robin was envisioning an outdoor session in the green grass, with trees flowers and such. Matt wanted to go more industrial or public, based on a landmark location in KC. Their happy medium choice? The Nelson grounds.

So with that… now you can physically SEE which pics I loved!!!

Cindy - LOVE these! cute kiddos! “Me & mini me”–boy looks just like Dad & girl like mom! :-) How fun!

July.6. 2012 - 9:41 pm

Darbi's Mom - These are priceless! That little girl is adorable! And the little boy is gorgeous! Darbi, you did a beautiful job with this family. Love them all!

{FAMILY} Charlee is half a year old!

I love this family. Heather has been so thoughtful, sweet and personable since day 1. Little Charlee was precious in or out of the womb. And Al. Well…Al keeps me on my toes.  I was never fooled by his “pretend” demeanor of someone who didn’t want his photo taken. Between you and me, I think he actually LIKES being fussed over.;)And…bugs like him too. haha

Anyway, they are most likely familiar to those who follow my blog. Their maternity and newborn pics were not too long ago. And I can’t believe we already did their 6 month pics earlier this month.

It was hands down, one of the easiest baby sessions I’ve ever done. No… it’s not something I say every time. But with Heather’s excellent wardrobe choices, the threesome’s sweet demeanor and the not-too-hot weather made for such fresh and lovely pics. And the best part is…I get to see them again for her one-year pics in November since they booked a Baby’s First Year package with me!! What fun to watch and document her grow up!!
