{Hitched} Lacey & Wes

I knew going into Lacey’s & Wes’s wedding that I could expect an emotional event, with a very hand-touched feel. But my expectations were surpassed. Here we go with the amazingness that was their wedding day (a shout out to my wonderful travel companion and assistant, Tori Goetsch!) :

Lacey’s friends and fam will attest to the fact that Lacey is QUEEN of “thoughtful.” She was even writing out THANK YOU cards to people she just couldn’t wait to share her appreciation with WHILE the girls were all getting ready.

She also could star in her own show… “DIY BRIDE GONE WILD.” Although she had help, she was the captain of a very lovely “ship” of lace, burlap, luxury papers, ribbons and bows. And let’s not forget the 450 delicious sugar cookies she made with one of her fave cohorts of all time to give away as favors.

Who puts their flower girls in leotards and tutus? This bride does. The three lil’ attendants were darling beyond words and though two of them needed a bit of coaxing down the aisle, they proved to bring delight to anyone who witnessed their mere existence. I wanted to play with them..and wear a tutu. But I had to work. Sniffle.

The wedding was in two small towns. The ceremony in Edina; the reception in La Plata. So the small-town feel was strong.

Before the ceremony, Lacey’s phone rang…and she actually answered it. Everyone gathered around because it wasn’t just any phone call. It was one from the FREAKING VICE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES. Joe. Biden. Called. Lacey. No joke. One of his right-hand men is a family friend of Lacey’s. How cool!!?

During bride and groom portraits, the Wes  not only wooed Lacey, but he also wooed me. I LOVE when my grooms go out of their way to be sweet to the love of their life in front of the camera… it not only provides a natural emotional connection between the two…but it gets me all giddy and inspires me. He always was trying to make things run more smoothly, acquiescing to ANY request that Lacey or I made. Lacey’s got a keeper.

The reception at Silver Rails Event Center, aside from being gorgeous (but I’ll save the descriptions as you can just see the pics for yourself), was a blast. The speeches hit home… sweet, sentimental, touching…and quite funny. Wes even spoke for a few and there wasn’t a woman in the place that wasn’t joining Lacey in staring dreamily at him because he shared the depths of his feelings for his new wife in a way that would make any female envy.  (He was also inspired by the BEST wedding gift I’ve ever seen… Lacey had his “old” Mustang restored and unveiled it the night before!!!) He didn’t shy away from amorous declarations or swoon-worthy compliments. I even teared up. (and went home and demanded that Neil write me a poem. JUST KIDDING!)

Photos as a whole were clearly a priority for them all of their lives. The reception venue was CHOCK FULL of photos…snapshots galore …and LOTS …possibly even ALL…of their engagement photos were displayed in some way! I love to see my couples put photos of all kinds to use beyond Facebook.

On a personal note, although I knew Lacey and her sister going into the wedding, I was still taken aback by how good everyone made me (and Tori, my assistant) feel. I was thanked personally NUMEROUS times for being there… and Lacey’s mom blew me away when she INSISTED that Tori and I sit at HER TABLE at the wedding… That just takes the cake.

Speaking of cake. It was yum yum…and pretty…but.. but…but…Lacey skipped the traditional “groom’s cake” and had Wes’s favorite COLDSTONE CREAMERY flavor provided. See, thoughtful?

It didn’t stop there. Rather than forbade that guests bring kids…they welcomed them with open arms. They kept them busy with the sweets bar and a kids corner with light sticks and coloring books. And of course, the dancefloor.;)

From the get go, I could FEEL a bond between everyone. Between Lacey and Wes, of course…but also between them and their bridal party and family members. HUGS were so heartfelt and laughs built on one another… from beginning to end. There was a connection. And I fed off of it. As I wrote about on my blog of their engagement session, Lacey’s dad passed away a few years ago. He didn’t miss the wedding though. He was very there…. He was there in the smiles and tears and hugs of the two wonderful men who walked his daughter down the aisle. He was there in glimpses between Lacey and Wes, in hand squeezes with her mom and sister, in silent moments when Lacey looked around to take in their special day. He was there. (Sorry for being sappy here…I just had to note it…because I truly felt it that day.)

Here I thought I wasn’t going to be able to write a lengthy post because I just had my flu shot today and my arm is killing me. But I just got carried away when I revisited everything that I wanted to box up and sprinkle on this blog. I am so thankful that Lacey and I have crossed paths again… and that she trusted me to take such important photos of her and Wes’s special day. Hugs to you both…and all who love you.And that’s A LOT of hugs.

Darbi's Mom - Beautiful, beautiful! Lacey was a gorgeous bride! Loved all the detail, colors, everything was top notch! The little flower girls are adorable! Darbi, you did a wonderful job of capturing the “moments of blissful love” with this couple. I say Lacey and Wes were “right on” in demanding that you shoot their wedding!

{New Life} Baby Gretchen

So I’m so behind in blogging that this baby girl is no longer a newborn. She’s classified as an INFANT…at 3 months old. Ooops. I’m terrible. But regardless of her age, she was a precious, cooperative baby who has only gotten cuter and cuter as I’ve witnessed via Instagram  (I follow her mom!)

Julia & Tyler have booked the Baby’s First Year package with me, so I am thrilled I’ll be able to document such an important year in their lives. As a mom myself now, I know firsthand how quickly these dearies change and how sappy we moms get that all of the “firsts” we eagerly await and tout soon are buried under nostalgia for the stage that has done and gone.

Baby Gretchen, with her wide eyes and little delicate mouth, won me over right off (I hear she is equally as persuasive with her pug siblings.;))  And Julia sure knows how to decorate. Gretchen’s baby room was darling in shades of grey and pink and pops of aqua!:)

Allow your day to get a bit cheerier with these images that prove how special new life is….and expect to see more of this lil’ one in 2013!!:)

Darbi's Mom - Oh my, what a beautiful gorgeous little baby girl! She has perfect features, and Darbi you caught the best of this couple’s little pride and joy!

{Hitched} Ruthie & Eric in Fremont, Neb.

Some photographers won’t shoot their family members. I understand why, but luckily, the family members who have hired me to document their weddings, they have not made it awkward, uncomfortable or unfair in any way. They have appreciated me and trusted me, they have turned to me for advice and for a reliable source of memories. I cannot be more honored when a cousin wants ME to be their wedding photographer.

After having shot my cousin Ruthie & Eric’s engagement session last year, I knew I was in for a fun, romantic and warm wedding. Their big day brought me to Fremont, Nebraska in mid-September. And being related to the bride, it was cool to also have my immediate family among the guests. INCLUDING my lil’ nugget, Weston.:)

Some things that filled my heart and photographer’s eye with joy and love that day:

  • Ruthie has exceptional taste. She really does. The color palette, the flowers… everything was so luscious and romantic.
  • I think they might have had an “in” with the lighting gods. All day long, the lighting was perfect! Even inside at the church!!
  • I scored my favorite dress shot ever, I believe.:)
  • You can always tell something about the bride and groom by their family and friends. Since I was related to half of the family members there, I can say this truthfully: Ruthie & Eric just brought two rocking families together. Both sides know how to have some fun!
  • I got to see one of my fave past brides & grooms… Ruthie’s brother, Warren, and his GORGEOUS wife, Jana, who is now expecting their 2nd kiddo. Their son, Gabe, was a killer ring-bearer. Quite a trio when added to the two flowergirls–Ruthie’s niece and her now step-daughter. All the kids were so well-behaved and DARLING when they didn’t think anyone else was looking. Photographers LOVE those types of kids. haha
  • The guys ended up carrying out my first successful pyramid photograph!! WHat big, strong men they are. ROARRRR! And the ladies were perfect attendants to Ruthie. Giggles galore and lots of encouragement for the stunning bride.
  • On a personal note, seeing my son… (in addition to my dad, mom, sister, her husband, their daughter, my brother and his wife) in the thrones of guests was so comforting. It was Weston’s first wedding–he took a small snooze around 8 p.m. that evening, but then rallied for the Cupid  Shuffle with his mom an hour later!;)AND, it was his first time being held by a bride, so I’m so glad it was Ruthie to do the honors. haha
  • I got to once again work with a good friend, Lara. She was my assistant and once again, being on her team was a blast. Luv ya!
  • Ruthie, you are a phenomenally beautiful person…your heart is genuine, you are a do-er AND a thinker… and you’ve definitely gained a man who knows that and will cherish you for the years to come. Eric, you’re such a good sport with kindness and protective nature. I can tell how proud you are of your adorable daughter, and how proud you are to now be Ruthie’s husband.:)I wish you BOTH sooooo many wonderful memories together…I hope our families can get together again soon!!!!!! xo times 10!
So with that… please enjoy!!!;)I also added in some notes through the pics.

This pic on the left is of Gabe and my Uncle Bill (Ruthie’s dad). He is one of the Gibsons whom Weston seems to take after.;)

Another fave shot for the books…:) This is Madisyn on the left. She was THE most mature little girl I’ve ever worked with. And when I told Eric that, he beamed with fatherly pride.;)These photos leave me wanting for nothing. Gorgeous bride: CHECK. Gorgeous lighting: CHECK. Sighhhhhh.

Yes, I’m posting a pic of my husband AND son (far left.) It’s MY blog.;)

Leave it to my brother (on the far left) to make things weird. He stalked behind kids with his monster hands, hoping to scare them. I don’t think it worked, but Ruthie & Eric got a chuckle.

Their other brother had already left, but here is Bill and my Dad!!!:)

{EXPECTING} Maternity meets sexy

Because I like to shoot a little bit of everything as it keeps my perspective fresh and my mind from getting bored, I don’t shoot A LOT of just one type of session. But I can say that I’ve never shot a maternity session like this one. When Jen contacted me last spring, she mentioned wanting to do a maternity-meets-boudoir session. Although I’ve shot several maternity sessions and I shoot boudoir all the time, I have never done a combo session, so was undeniably intrigued. I admit…these sessions aren’t for everyone on two levels. And you can just do them anywhere. But Jen’s home proved to be AMAZINGLY LIT and SIMPLY, BEAUTIFULLY decorated… coupled with a seriously HOT MAMA… pow. Magic was made.

Also worth noting, she already had TWO children. So this is her 3rd. How great does she look!? (her son was home that day so we added him in for a few pics. What a darling he is!!)

And she already has her baby girl, Stella Jane, because I’m THAT behind in blogging.  ha Congratulations, Jen and family!!:)

{Hitched} Paige & Jim in Omaha, Neb.

I love shooting back in Omaha…my old stomping grounds. I especially love shooting in O-town when the subjects in front of the camera also have a tie in with the olden days when I lived in Nebraska. And such was the wedding of Paige & Jim. I went to middle school/junior high with Paige’s younger brother, Tyler. And then Paige was a year ahead of me at Omaha North High. I never heard a bad thing about Paige. EVERYONE who knew her, loved her. She was cool, adorable, fun and a great cross-country runner. Last year when I shot their engagement photos, and they first started toying with hiring me for their wedding, I secretly crossed my fingers that it’d work out for us. A big WOOT needs to be proclaimed because it did!:)

My pal Cara Bresette-Yates assisted me on this August day.

In the 5.5 years I’ve been shooting weddings, I’ve never encountered an all-out rainy day. Sure, it’s threatened rain, it’s spit rain, it rained during unimportant times… but this day that Paige & Jim chose as their wedding day, in late August, when they’d expected record high temps and blaring sunshine, especially after having a nearly unparalleled drought throughout the midwest…this day it was rainy ALL DAY LONG. ESPECIALLY during the times for portraits.

But this bride and groom, they handled the dreary weather like champs. They turned to Cara and I with trust and we made it work! Overhangs, indoor spots with lovely lighting and bridges were our friends!

Speaking of friends, Paige & Jim’s crew knew how to party. They kept the morale high and Paige & Jim laughing.

Another first for me… the ceremony was finished in under 5 minutes. No joke. From the time the first groomsman and bridesmaid made their way down the aisle, to the time the recessional was finished, it was under FIVE MINUTES. Hence the photo I posted below of Paige’s open mouth laugh because even she had been surprised at how quickly it flew by.

The venue was gorgeous, once again at the Durham Museum.

Paige & Jim’s simple decor and fresh muted color palette set the mood for a romantic, cozy affair.

There was lots of giggling all day long–from the appearance of a stuffed sloth, to the bridesmaid dresses (by J. Crew) that allowed for some creative formations, to the revealing toasts and some hilarious reception antics. Cara and I had a blast at this wedding, frizzy hair be damned!;)

And while I’m pointing out firsts…I’d also like to bring attention to Paige’s awesomeness. AFter she and Jim cut the cake, she held out a plate with a piece of cake on it to Cara and me and demanded that we taste it then and there. She didn’t take no for an answer…thankfully.;)(YUMMY CAKE by the Omaha Cake Gallery)

To top it all off, one bridesmaid and the bride herself texted me the day after to thank me. THAT is invaluably appreciated. I heart you all!:)

So please…enjoy their wedding pics… and holler at them in the comments to tell them what your favorites are!;)

Paige Brown - Darbi- I just want to say that Jim and I had the best of the best when it came to choosing you and Cara. We could not be happier with our pictures and can’t wait to see all of them! It was crazy dealing with the weather that day but the two of you too charge and did what had to be done to get some of the coolest shots I’ve ever seen (i may be bias though ;) Seriously though, I didn’t give you and Cara much direction at all and loved the fact that you guys took charge and told an amazing story with these beautiful pictures. Thanks again :)

Love Paige & Jim
