I’m going to close out my mini sessions that were shot in Omaha LAST OCTOBER (yes, that is how behind I am with blogging!) with TWO sessions in one post. These two have a few things in common:

1. Both of these ladies are my friends.

2. Their names look like they rhyme…. Lara and Cara. But Lara is pronounced “Lah-ra.” 🙂

3. Lara AND Cara are both GORGEOUS mamas…and they have little GORGEOUS daughters. Carys (in the first set) will be 2 this July, so she was 15 months in these pics) and London was 2 in February.

4. Their husbands are great sports for not being super fans of being in pics, but they know how important it is to the woman they married. 😉

5. Lara AND Cara are both photographers. So they get lots of pics of their younguns but not so many pics of THEM in front of the camera with the loves of their lives. I know the pain all too well! So I am incredibly honored they trusted me to get some images for them to cherish in other ways.

6. Lara ANd Cara have been my assistants at weddings in the past (separately!). I love shooting with them!!

7. Both of them wanted sessions as late in the day as possible because they know all too well how amazing that end-of-day light is. And as you can see with these pics, it was yummy all over.

So here are Lara, Chris and Carys’s pics first. Love the color palettes. Love Carys’s playfulness, and I adore the color palette. My husband helped me out during these mini shoots and at the end, Carys signed MORE and pointed to Neil. I wanted to cry. How cute is that? She wanted MORE NEIL!!! who doesn’t? 😉 So many of their pics were textbook-dream session quality.

So many faves!!!!!

And lastly, Cara, Chuck and London. Cara always comes to the table with a vision, and I am always excited to work with her. London might not have been the smiley-est thing in this cold weather, but darn it, is she darling or what? All three together are simple picture perfect…and added to the golden light of late fall… I WILL EAT YOU UP! 😉

My most favorite shot of the entire mini session spectacle is this one….

Anyway ladies, thank you for coming to me! And for allowing me to watch your kiddos grow up on Instagram and the like. You both are amazing mothers, and I am so grateful to have pals who have so much in common (with one another, too!) with me as we walk this journey of being moms, wives, friends and photographers together!!! xo to you both. and to your fams!

I loved that I kicked off the 2013 wedding season with a wedding back in my hometown of Omaha. You might recall Beth & Tom from a fall engagement session… I was so eager to see the lovebirds two weekends ago because I know how excited they were for this day to finally come.

So what was there to love? Lots:

And it was a rare spring day in that it was one of the few that actually felt like it belonged in the month of April! Blue skies, just a good mix of warmth with a refreshing chill.

When Beth originally told me what her color palette was for the wedding (Red & purple!), I couldn’t wait to get my lens on the vibrant hues as they aren’t a common pair. And I LOVE when a wedding dares to be bold.

The delicate dazzle of Beth’s dress was perfect for her! And according to the bride, shopping for it was the least stressful part of the wedding planning because she did have a “this is the one!” moment.

The florist was Tom’s Uncle Todd w/ Kearney Floral in Kearney, Nebraska. That man has mad skills as you’ll see when you see the brilliant bouquets and arrangements below.

The groom’s cousins (who I believe happen to be daughters of the florist uncle) sang one of the prettiest duets I’ve ever heard at a wedding. The rendition of Steven Curtis Chapman’s “I will be Here” gave me chills

The family members and friends were warm and playful. I never felt rushed, even when the timeline was tight. They were all game to just do whatever it took to make Tom & Beth happy and the day go as smoothly as possible.

The ringbearer’s shoes. Red converse. Need I say more? Oh, actually, on that same note, take a peek at the groomsmen’s socks in their photo below. I am a fan for pops of colors in fun places. 😉

Beth has such a gorgeous smile and laugh, and Tom has no problem getting her to do either.

A part of the pastor’s sermon was regurgitated during the Best Man’s speech in a very funny and personal way. And the matron of honor’s speech was full of emotion and tears, and even though she played it off to the fact that she herself was expecting her 2nd child and it was the hormones, I had no excuse for the tears in MY eyes. haha

The reception venue (the Scottish Rite center) was commandeering and mysteriously romantic. I love shooting in venues with character!

Beth surprised Tom with a groom’s cake made to look like the cover of an album by his favorite band, TOOL. that’s pretty cool!

They had an Instagram hashtag set up and put notes on the tables to encourage guests to take photos and tag them so they can see them later. I wish this had been around when I got married!!!

Ok, enough…let’s let the photos do some talking. I hope you enjoy! Leave some comment love on this post or on Facebook so they know how fabulous you thought their day was!

Beth & Tom– I hope you had a blast in Jamaica and that this blog posts makes your back-to-the-real-world status a bit easier to swallow. I am so glad Lara and I got to be there on your big day to document it unfold and am thankful to have had your wedding be the one to launch me into a season. I can only hope that the rest of this year’s weddings are as memorable as yours! xo

The service I provide as a photographer is one that most would say is not necessary. It’s a luxury expense to many. And although it might not be necessary since my photographs aren’t directly saving lives or feeding the masses, I do feel they save precious memories and feed the soul. So necessary? Maybe not. But important, yes. Because my skill set doesn’t include anything that ALL would consider super valuable to others, I try, each year, to donate my services as a way of doing good. Not for humanity as a whole, as that is a bit too far-reaching for lil’ ol’ me, but instead for a family here and there, or a charity whose cause is something I hold close to my heart.

Last year, my mom mentioned to me how a friend from her work was going through some trying times with her family, and I was moved by their story.

After experiencing a pain that wouldn’t subside around Thanksgiving of 2011,  a tumor the size of a football was discovered surrounding the kidney of Beth’s 2nd youngest son, Jared.  The diagnosis was that of a rare cancer called Wilms tumor; only 500 people a year in the United States receive this diagnosis a year.

Jared, only 14 years old at the time, was one of those 500.

Patients with Wilms tumor typically respond well to chemo treatments with the goal to shrink the tumors until they are operable. So for the past year and a half, Jared has been undergoing treatment while trying to maintain a somewhat normal life with his three brothers, love for sports and being active in his church. His family has been steadfast in their commitment to getting Jared through the ups and downs. Their support net is vast, and their faith in God is strong and unyielding.

When I heard Jared’s story, I wanted to document this family of 6 so they could have some happy images to remind them of the good times during this trial of their life. Beth of course was excited at the idea for professional photos, and although her boys might not be huge fans of the camera, they put on their “good son” hats and humored me that cold day in October.

Chase, Josh, Dillon and  Jared were all such pleasures to work with, and one thing was clear after spending such a small amount of time with them: They can handle whatever the world throws at them because they have one another as sources of laughter and strength.

As an update, Jared had surgery in January to remove a tumor from his lung. And a few days later, on January 17, he was declared cancer-free. It’s too soon to be labeled as being in remission, but so far, so good, and his family continues to pray that they can stay this new course. In the meantime, Jared is trying to get back into the swing of things, literally…playing baseball for his school reserve team. He is overjoyed to be back on the pitcher’s mound, and is looking forward to catching up on missed school and volunteering at a summer camp in the coming months. His mom says he is so thankful to have a 2nd chance at life, and he’s comforted knowing that though the road ahead might not be smooth at every turn, he won’t be walking it alone.

I am in awe at her and her husband’s own strength, as a mom myself now, because they rallied to keep their chins up, hands folded in prayer, and arms always open for a truly genuine hug for the boys they adore. On the Caring Bridge journal, I read a paragraph Jared’s mom wrote that really hit home:

“Cancer has been anything but pleasant but cancer has changed our lives for the better because it has reminded us ever so abruptly who is in charge, what is important and it has given us clarity. We have continued to grow as a family, expanding our knowledge, our compassion, our ability to love and our ability to accept life as it comes. We’ve learned to fight and come out stronger. We’ve learned to reach out to God and to others and as a result, have deeper more meaningful relationships. I used to believe we could shape the circumstances around us, but now I know God uses circumstances to shape us.”

Enough said.

So I present to you, this testosterone-heavy family… who will forever be a beacon of admirable determination, enduring love and resounding inspiration. Thank you for letting me tell your story! xo

Jared is on the left! 🙂

My mom used to teach Jill in Sunday school. She was in my brother’s grade, and she played on my softball team (I think we were the Pink Panthers, am I correct??) I was so incredibly excited when she contacted me about doing a Smilestone (baby’s first year) package for their daughter. First off, I had no idea that she and her husband were in Kansas City… nor that she was expecting!
It was a snowy day when I arrived at their house in Overland Park. I was greeted by a rambunctious, sweet-faced malti-poo mix, named Tucker. We became fast buddies. I still smelled like Wendy’s chicken nuggets, so maybe that is why. haha
Anyway, Lauren was the reason I was there. She came into the world last Friday, at 8 lbs, 9 oz… At not even a week old, she was not the sleepiest of babies like so many new-to-this-world beings are. But she was super sweet, and easy to shoot. AND CUTE. Plus she had the most unique cry..I wish I could have recorded it.
Even more notably…she gave me my first baby hickey! That’s right. While holding her, she latched on to my bicep…and it HURT! haha Needless to say, I handed her over to her mama immediately after I got her detached.
Being around Mike & Jill, it was clear that they had brought a little girl into a loving home. And a well-decorated one! 😉 Mike and Jill have a history…Jill and Mike’s sister were close friends through high school. They went as prom dates Mike’s senior year, but that was it. They were both beckoned to different colleges, not really keeping in touch through those years. But somehow, they ended up in Kansas City…AND Mike’s softball team needed another female, so he had heard through the grapevine that Jill was in town. Having honed her softball skills since the days she played with ME, she ended up being a valuable asset to Mike’s team and it wasn’t long before they hit it off out of the dugout, too. And look at them now! They are married and have a darling daughter and one of the most well-behaved dogs.
Please enjoy some of my favorite images from our afternoon together.

I kept putting this post off because I feel like I haven’t been in a sappy enough of a mood to warrant posting something so dear to me. But alas, the mood still hasn’t hit me, and now it’s getting to be not as timely, so I shall post regardless.

This is my baby brother and his lovely wife, my sister-in-law. I shot their wedding a few years ago. They booked a mini session with me this past fall when I was in Omaha, since that is where they currently live. They wanted it to be a true family session, so they had to bring my furry niece and nephew, Laila and Dozer. The dogs actually behaved. My brother? now that’s a different story. haha Just kidding! They did great considering it was so darn cold outside. And the last pic…that was a surprise for me. A prop they pulled out at the last minute. I shot that frame with tears in my eyes.

That’s right…I’m going to be an AUNT again (of the non-furry type)! Come June!!!! And they’re having a girl!!!! (how cool of a way for them to tell me though, right???)

I already know Troy & Wendy will be amazing parents after seeing how much they love, care for and put their dogs before many other things in life. And as someone who didn’t think I could ever love a child more than my cat (haha), these two are in for a treat. I can’t wait to watch them grow… fall in love… and blindly walk the path of parenthood. I just hope they know that they aren’t alone. Xo
