I am not getting to work much this week thanks to the fact that we have been hit hard with snow here in Kansas City. That means that daycare is closed, along with schools. So things have come to a halt in more ways than one.

I am trying to find joy in the little things with my 2-year-old. We played in the snow with him yesterday for 20 minutes (about all he could last before his lil’ skin became too cold!). And when I was going through the pics today of the few I grabbed, this one stood out and made me realize I’ve been a bit too grumpy with these “gifts” of days off with my precious little one.

So let it also be a reminder to you…

I am trying to play catch up this winter with all my blog posts. First up…on this glorious snow day… (sarcasm fully present, though unseen…)…is a combo post of two families.

The first is a family who has been on my blog several times in the past. Brogan has always been such a charmer to work with. And now, he’s not the only big man in town. This past week, he became a big brother!!! I can’t wait to meet Graham!!! As of these mini sessions, Graham had four months left to cook!!! Omaha-mini-blog1-001Omaha-mini-blog1-002Omaha-mini-blog1-003Omaha-mini-blog1-004Omaha-mini-blog1-005Omaha-mini-blog1-006Omaha-mini-blog1-007Omaha-mini-blog1-008Omaha-mini-blog1-009And this family is another all-son group! Christina is a friend from elementary school….and I am so happy that we’ve stayed in touch because her posts about her ornery, bright kiddos crack me up. Meet Zachary and Eric. They are a handful, but also a mouthful of smiles. We had so much fun!!Omaha-mini-blog1-010Omaha-mini-blog1-011Omaha-mini-blog1-012Omaha-mini-blog1-013Omaha-mini-blog1-014Omaha-mini-blog1-015Omaha-mini-blog1-016Omaha-mini-blog1-018Omaha-mini-blog1-017

So let’s talk about cute couples. How do I get so many of them? Seriously. Taryn & Kyle are everything I want in a Darbi G. bride & groom.

Kyle is a CPA and Taryn works in the Admissions Department at a children’s hospital, but don’t be thrown off by their professional-sounding careers. They are PLAYFUL as all get out. Like, fun, goofy, spontaneous, up for anything. I love shooting couples like that!

They met about five years ago at a fraternity party at Baker University where Taryn was attending. Kyle was a Jayhawk, but he went to the party with some friends since he admitted he had nothing else better to do. And oh, how they both are so happy he made that decision.  They went on their first date a few weeks later…and the date’s events included a late-night tour of the KU campus and then they went to a park to swing on the playground.

It was clear to Taryn that Kyle was a keeper when she got food poisoning thanks to a Jimmy John sandwich gone wrong and Kyle helped her through some rather unappetizing moments. 😉 Kyle says Taryn’s role in his life was solidified when he realized how she was able to tolerate his stinky apartment, complete with some crazy neighbors, and that she was a great caretaker when HE was sick. He says he’s fallen in love with her over and over since then. Sigh.

Their proposal included a walk around the Arboretum. They stopped on a bridge in a secluded area and he proclaimed his love for her and then brandished a gorgeous ring to adorn her finger. Being equally as smitten, she had no trouble putting that ring on as an answer to his question.

So in addition to them just sounding cute on paper, they are sooo cute in person, too. Their engagement session in the Crossroads are was full of laughter (and some girly chatter about Pretty Little Liars, since Taryn and I both are fans…thanks for putting up with that, Kyle!!) and dramatic lighting. I couldn’t’ get enough and was dismayed when the sun seemingly set too early.

And I recently asked Taryn if she’d share a bit of her and Kyle’s feelings as to why they did an engagement session, what they enjoyed about the session with me, and what they felt they came away with. I asked for a paragraph. She gave me a novel’s worth! Seriously. I teared up and smiled so big because her words reaffirmed my own dedication to my job. Here is an excerpt from the unexpectedly amazing review of her experience with me thus far:

When we met Darbi her AWESOME work made sense because she’s AMAZING. She is very organized, informative and so easy to get along with! She totally ROCKS! I wanted engagement photography for many reasons – it’s a tradition, my fiancé and I never had professional photographs taken together, and I wanted to preserve this incredible journey we’ve just embarked on! During an engagement your love is electrified and these photos were my way of shouting it from the mountain-top – “I love him!!” We are were a little nervous to take these photos… Okay, I’ll be honest – we were REALLY nervous. We’d never taken photographs together before and both hadn’t had professional photos taken since we were seniors in high-school – we seriously considered having a drink before getting started… Fortunately, our nerves were put to rest when we met up with Darbi! She made us giggle and smile, and just be ourselves in front of the camera! Darbi is so organized when it comes to all aspects of your engagement photos – she helps you plan the time of year, time of day, the location and gives you lots of pointers beforehand regarding clothing and props – which made me feel so much more comfortable! We had a blast walking like an Egyptian and giving each other the “sexy look” (what my fiancé calls our love look!). Darbi even showed us some of the photos as we were taking them – I was getting SO EXCITED to see the finished product!  When we got our photos, I cried… “just look at us…you can feel the love” I told him. Kyle, my fiancé even said “damn, I look good!”, which as a bride gave me the chills. At a wedding everyone is looking at the bride but to hear the groom-to-be say this about our couple photos made me happier than words can describe! Our engagement photos are beautiful, we’re so proud of them! We showed them off to family and friends, even coworkers! During our engagement session Darbi took a photo of me by myself and Kyle said “I want this one at my desk, so I can look at how beautiful you are ALL DAY!”  Ladies, does it get better than that? We are in love with these photos and have them proudly displayed in our home. We can’t wait till our wedding!”

With that, I present to you… the dolls of the century… 😉 Taryn & Kyle…(And does Taryn look like a young Charlize Theron or what??)

  • Darbi's Mom - Ooh, WOW! What more can I say? What a beautiful, cute couple! Darbi, you did a beautiful job on these. They will cherish these forever, I’m sure. I LOVE the one of them by the water with the sun peaking through the trees. They will make a gorgeous bride and groom, to say the least!ReplyCancel

I thought it’d be best if I pretended I was caught up with blogging AND followed up the previous maternity session of Hayley & Josh with their newborn shoot. Henry was born Dec 16 and weighed  8 lbs 14oz . Nearly 9 lbs of CUTENESS! The proud parents live in St. Joseph, so I drove up to their cozy home on such a cold day and warmed myself up with baby snuggles. He was such a sweetheart.

Josh is a self-confessed GOOF…and he apparently has a thing for Despicable Me and the crazy, trouble-making minions. I feel horrible that I’ve never seen the movie and I know that I have lost some cool points in Josh’s eyes. (It’s on my list!!!) Hayley is to be given mad props for only smiling at this collection of Minion toys that Josh has collected. So naturally, they had to have their baby boy fit right in. How cute?!

Enjoy some of my favorites from their lifestyle newborn photography session in their home. 🙂 I can’t wait till this summer when I’ll be photographing this lil’ guy again!

DarbiGPhotography-Henrynewborn-001LOVE this expression. He might not share his dad’s pro-minion feelings quite yet. DarbiGPhotography-Henrynewborn-002DarbiGPhotography-Henrynewborn-003DarbiGPhotography-Henrynewborn-004DarbiGPhotography-Henrynewborn-005How gorgeous are mama and baby together? Totally not a fan of kisses quite yet. hahahaDarbiGPhotography-Henrynewborn-020BEFORE AND AFTER. (And my apologies on the inconsistency of the vertical v horizontal framing… our surroundings didn’t allow for a horizontal one at their home. 🙂

With the New Year one day away… I thought I’d post a session that is just as filled with promise, expectations, hope and excitement. Hayley & Josh might look familiar. A bit more than a year ago, they were married. And now, they take their love story to a new level with a baby boy. And because I am still behind at blogging, this post isn’t as timely because Hayley & Josh already have the lil’ one who is so perfectly hidden in his mama’s belly below. I will be photographing his sweetness in 3 days! I can’t wait!

But let’s back up a wee bit. Josh and Hayley were so much fun on this windy day in Parkville. They came down from St. Joe for me to document the beautiful stage of pregnancy.  And Hayley is indeed beautiful, no?

Enjoy some of my fave images from their Expectant session. And Hayley & Josh—can’t wait to see you in a couple of days!!! xo
