This is not an engagement session. But it looks like it. This is a newlywed session. And after doing it, I think there should be more of them! They were married in Lawrence the week before we shot these photos. We originally planned on shooting these BEFORE their wedding, but Matt wanted to be brace-less, and by the time he got them off, it was too close to their date.

So on this lovely night in late September, these two kids came to the game, ready to play. They were so relaxed, so goofy, so giddy with one another…still on Cloud 9 from they day they married their best friend.

The weather was fantastic, too… we just ate it up. And I have so many faves in this session. I love how I can feel the warmth and the love in these images. If YOU can’t, you might want to see a doctor. šŸ˜‰

Enjoy Megan & Matt’s Newlywed shoot!

I could not have asked for a more joyful, beautiful or sweet wedding to cap off my season than that of Stefanie & Alex. Ali and I got to go to Branson for the occasion… the ceremony and reception took place at Integrity Hills. So that of course set the tone for Ā a perfect day. It was incredibly windy, but balmy and comfortable. Stefanie is hands down one of the most gracious and accommodating brides I’ve ever met. And her smile…her smile LIGHTS up the room and the faces of those around her. When I met her mom, it was all too obvious from where she got that trait.

So things I shall remember about this wedding:

There was so much laughter, and light-heartedness from the get-go. No one was rushed, no one was in a less-than-Cloud 9 mood.

The wind was the least of our worries. Apparently, the wood that makes up the chapel attracts a certain type of wasp. They were EVERYWHERE. I might have screamed a few times, or stood frozen, in an awkward position, hoping the winged creature would abandon its perch on my neck… but even more notable is the way Stef & Alex handled the unwelcome guests. Even when Stef was “attacked” by one, she smartly wrapped herself in the veil and waited it out. I am SO glad that I got pics of it! (Below!)

Alex…in addition to being a dapper, good-looking groom, he proved to be one who so easily tugged on Ali’s & my heartstrings..repeatedly. The First Glance between the two of them was the most emotional one to date… and he wasn’t too macho to embrace the emotion. He’s a keeper, Stef! šŸ˜‰ And he’s also funny. His antics all day, combined with those of his equally as good-natured groomsmen, had us laughing a lot. One such joke he continued to make…he referred to Stef’s train on her dress as a “caboose.” And the more I thought about it…the more accurate that is! šŸ˜‰

Stefanie wore pearls around her neck that came from overseas. Her dad when toĀ Japan when he was a young Boy Scout for the World Jamboree and bought a bag of pearls Ā off of a street vendor. He brought them back and gave to his mom. She eventually had them strung into a necklace, and that turned into something-borrowed for Stef!

The ceremony was yet another to pull tears from my own eyes. The chapel, with so many windows revealing a gorgeous dusk outside, Ā  proved to be a romantic, intimate and exquisite setting for the official joining of such a gorgeous couple.

I mentioned on their post for their engagement photos that Stef is the first real redhead that I’ve ever shot. So that was once again exciting. And her locks matched the coppery warmth of the leaves that were remaining on the almost-bare trees. I could have shot these two all day long. The setting provided almost too many picturesque backdrops…coupled with a couple who immediately exuded love when they touched or looked at one another…and I was positively smitten with my “job” that day!

The reception unfolded in the grand, rustic ambiance of The Stables. Breathtaking. Seriously. The tables were adorned with simple clusters of baby’s breath, and hurricane glasses w/ candles and metallic filler. You couldn’t look anywhere in the barn without feeling cozy.

As Stefanie said, “There will be no booty-dancing.” The reception was low-key, like a long cocktail hour, with the comforting buzz of conversation, laughter and well wishes. Merriment was at every turn! And in the corner, they had set up an “instant” photo album for their guestbook. Guests took their own photos with an Instapix camera and added them to a scrapbook. Me likey!!

And this was the first First Dance that I ever told my husband about because the song they chose was right up his alley–in fact, it’s by his namesake! They did HARVEST MOON by Neil Young. Props to them for being a bit different! šŸ˜‰

Ok ok ok… done chattering… I am just so pumped to close out my 2013 weddings with such an intimate, visually decadent affair. Stef & Alex… thank you SO much for bringing Ali and I along. Your families were so warm, so friendly, so fun! And your friends are so clearly supportive, witty, sweet and some were even ornery. šŸ˜‰ I wish you a just-as-perfect holiday season, your first as married! And… go, TIGERS!!!!! XOXOXOXOXXO

I have never felt so safe on a wedding day as I did when Tiffany & Brian got married. They and their friends, collectively, are the buffest people I’ve ever been around. It’s no wonder…since this one-of-a-kind couple own a Crossfit Gym here in Kansas City. So that means they surround themselves by equally as fit individuals. And their zest for working out parallels their zest for life. There was such an energy all day, which Ali and I found inspiring.

And let’s take a moment to commend Tiffany’s great taste. From the bird-cage veil with a regal brooch, to her black jeweled-studded shoes and her spunky dress from Altar Bridal, to the chunky glimmering necklace and classic-meet-flirty bouquet… My camera and I couldn’t get enough! Add all of that to a bride who is as fierce as she is adorable, and seriously, I couldn’t have asked for anything else. Well, maybe an equally as noteworthy groom. And Brian definitely qualifies as that! A strapping lad, times 10, he is! And such a good guy through and through.

The two of them just cheese so big when they’re around one another. They are playful, they cherish one another…they push one another to their best levels.

I loved that they chose a small wedding party. Large wedding parties are more common, so it’s a nice change to have only a handful of friends to incorporate into photos as that allows us more opportunities. And though their numbers might have been small, their support for Tiffany & Brian and their desire to have fun were quite the opposite.

It was the windiest day I’ve ever shot a wedding… evidenced by a few pics below of the flower girls’ hair turned tenacious…and a bride who just went with it all and embraced the crazy bursts of air. The bridal party were such good sports, hunkering down with the gusts came our way. Other than the wind, the weather was splendid for a November day!

The ceremony and reception took place at the Vox Theater…which proved to be such a great venue…a romantic, simple location for fun and good times to unfold. The neighborhood around the venue was colorful in more ways than one, and we had some fun on the retro playground across the street.

their friend, Will, married them, and it was his first ceremony but you’d never guess it. He did such a great job! One of the highlights of the ceremony pics for me was Tiffany wasn’t the only one to pump her fist in the air when they were officially married…but her mom did, too! šŸ˜‰

So anyway…I’ll put a sock in it so you call can drool over this classy & sassy wedding…and if you’re a bit envious of her perfectly toned arms or the way Brian lifts Tiffany over his head without breaking a sweat… then give them a call because I hear they are exceptional coaches. šŸ˜‰

{Also…stay tuned because I am doing an extreme bridal session with these two later this winter!!!!!!}

It does something funny to my head when I feel the warmth of my space heater at my ankles while I sip on a hot beverage and hear the wind outside cause the bare branches to tap against my window… when I at the same time am posting a blog where the family is wearing sleeveless shirts and being frisky in warm sunshine. Sigh. How I miss it already.

You’ve seen this family before if you’re a faithful blog-watcher… This is Danielle & Andrew…and their ornery gob of fun, Peighton. She was just as fun on this session as the last one, and she kept me on my toes. Her good mood lasted about 45 minutes longer than the average toddler. So this enabled our session at Deanna Rose Farmstead to yield some great, playful images of her with her beloved parents.

The secret word for the shoot was TOODLES, from Mickey Mouse Club. If I said that, I was guaranteed a smile. šŸ˜‰ She is an MMC fan, that’s for sure.

So if you’re cold…look at these pics. And if you’re needing a smile, try to say “toodles” in a high-pitched sing-songy voice … in the mirror… and if you don’t crack a grin, you might need to have someone tickle you. šŸ˜‰

xo to the O family!

  • Darbi's Mom - Aw-w-w-w! What adorable pictures! Peighton is so cute! Great pictures of this family, Darbi! Beautiful job once again!ReplyCancel

Not many girls can say they fell for a guy because of his mullet or jean vest. But Clare can. Brian was making that very fearless fashion statement while attending his fraternityā€™s themed ā€˜Merica party in 2008. As Clare, who also was there, puts it, she found his look irresistible and the rest is history.

The two were both going to college at Creighton (in my hometown of Omaha! Woot!), and today, they are using their college educations daily in St. Louis. Clare is an ER nurse, and Brian is a CPA. Despite their official professions, both long to fulfill their aspirations of moving to a tropical destinationā€¦where Clare would open up a boutique store and Brian would start a restaurant/bar on the water. I do hope they get their wish! šŸ˜‰

Before they can get to check THAT dream off the list, they had to tackle the whole ā€œgetting marriedā€ thing first. Last year, the two were here in Kansas City ringing in the New Year with Clareā€™s family. Here is how the question popping went down, in their own words: New Year’s Eve morning, Clare went out shopping with her mom and sister-in-law, and was eventually and strategically dropped off back at her house where Brian was waiting. Once Clare had finished explaining the different facets that comprised her newly purchased Michael Kors purse that she further described as “the most beautiful thing I have ever seen,” Brian felt obligated to challenge this newly adopted belief with the engagement ring he designed several weeks prior. As the two sat together at Clare’s favorite place in the world, home, Brian nervously reiterated a loving speech, thought up and rehearsed the night before while watching Space Jam, and presented Clare with the engagement ring. It was a perfect surprise; Clare had absolutely no idea it was coming. After the proposal we went to lunch on the plaza, followed by another surprise for Clare. We went to her brother’s house with a plan to get ready for our evening out. Instead, Brian had Clare’s family along with his, in from out of town, waiting with champagne to celebrate the engagement!

These two Cardinal fans did one thing their beloved team couldnā€™t do this year (wink wink)ā€¦ they brought their A game to their wedding for a HUGE win. Letā€™s see if I can recall all that I loved about their day!

Letā€™s start out superficially and talk about the insane amount of good-looking people at their wedding. Starting of course with the bride and groom themselves. Clare looks like Kristen Bell, and Brian is equally as adorable. Their wedding party was rife with gorgeous faces (definitely runs in the families since several bridal party members were siblings with the bride or groom!)ā€¦ youā€™ll see for yourself below!

I love that Clare is the only girl in her family of six. She has 3 brothers, and you can just tell as much as they gave her a hard time growing up, they adore their sister. They were hilarious!

The church was set up unlike any Iā€™d ever shot in. This allowed us for some interesting angles, which is always fun to keep our jobs exciting. šŸ˜‰

Their families were full of jokes and smilesā€¦ hugs and story-tellingā€¦ and one of Clareā€™s grandmas impressed Ali and I with her iphone photography skills. šŸ˜‰

From the bees that attacked the bouquets during the wedding party pics, to the nasty canine detritus that one groomsman almost sat in on the steps, to the soundtrack provided by the onlookers of BBQers at Swope Park, Ali and I had such a good time with the group! We laughed. We embraced lovely light. And we could have shot these crazy kids all day!

At the reception, friends and family of Clare & Brian surprised them with a ā€œflash mobā€ type dance. As much as I wanted to shoot these images for them, I also wanted to just watch. It was so well done and funny!! Clare & Brianā€™s open mouths and burst of laughter just added to the moment.

So with that, I shall tell their story in photos. C&Bā€¦you two have joined two fun, gorgeous and sweet families together, officially. I hope you forever continue to grow together, and closer to your dreams of making a living in paradise. Your wedding was so amazing and the only thing I regret is that Brian didnā€™t bring his mullet. šŸ˜‰

Take care! xo
