Jennifer and I go way back. She was my buddy at my first job out of college (working for the Missouri Senate communications office). After I left, she gradually moved up the ladder and is now the director there. We remained pals, despite my move to Kansas City in 2009. There isn’t a whole lot I missed about Columbia, Mo. But I do miss Jennifer. She and her husband, Steven, now are parents of TWO, so I have turned to her time and again with my own questions and stories about parenting. She is a pep talker, a great listener, and I hope someday we end up in the same city again. ๐Ÿ™‚

Molly, who turned 2 in March, is an ornery, sweet little girl who LOVES her new role of being a big sister. Logan turned 1 in September, and is already catching on to things his sister does. He is such a mellow, smiley, bright kiddo, and I know that Weston and these two are going to have some fun in the future together!!!

Hanging out with these four that chilly morning in September was a riot. I just wanted to hug them all, but instead, I photographed them being the silly lil’ family that they are. I think these pics do a good job in encapsulating the love that is abundant in this family, as well as the relationship between Molly & Logan as they drive their parents mad one minute, and fill them with pride the next, with their hilarious sister-brother antics.

We never did succeed in getting a perfect pic of just the two of them… but that’s the nature of the beast of two toddlers mixed with cold weather and minds of their own. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Holy. Beautiful. Day. That is what I feel about Alissa & Greg’s wedding. If you want to read more about their back story, visit their blog post for their family/engagement session (one of my faves ever!). But to sum a bit of it up, their wedding day was more than just a joining of two hearts. It was a melding of FOUR hearts because Greg has two kids (the enchanting Jenna and the ever-sweet Cole) of his own that Alissa also married that day. You hear stories about how step-kids don’t embrace their new mom, but ohmigosh, that is completely the opposite for this family. Alissa gets along so well with them, and you can tell they both look up to her. And Greg is always beaming with pride when looking at the three loves of his life.

Their wedding took place at a venue I’d never heard of until I met them. Bee Creek barn in Weston, part of Weston Bend State Park. It was such a darling location. And the weather could not have been more perfect. Despite it being mid October, fall colors were not in abundance by nature’s design…but Alissa’s wedding palette provided more than enough of the seasonal trappings. The floral magic was made by Dutch Flowers here in Kansas City.

Greg build the archway under which he and Alissa exchanged heartfelt, personal vows. (I did cry once again during this ceremony! I can’t help it. When a couple shares with their guests like that, tears are a given!) Everything was so vibrant, from beginning to end. And I’ve have never seen such darling kids at a wedding. I mean, TONS of darlings. TONS. I did do a tiny cute-kid montage below, but that is seriously only showing about 1/4 of the kiddos that were charming my lens and me that day.

The ring-bearer is a 2-year-old ham. And I’m not talking about the other pig meat. He was ornery, and I loved it! He even brought me cars in the middle of the ceremony to show me. I would have gotten a pic of his proffering if I had only had a lens that could focus super close to my face. haha And the flower girl has totally mastered the model-icious pout. She is absolutely beautiful, no?

Another thing that wowed me was that the guitarist/vocalist was a last-minute sub in when their original music-provider bailed. Taylor Gary out of Oklahoma rocked the wedding. He covered so many songs from Beatles to Flaming Lips. And he sounded SO good. (He is a member of the band Oklahoma Cloud Factory.) Thumbs up!!

Ali and I both agreed that our tummies and tongues were equally ecstatic to see the array of PIE that Alissa and Greg had laid out at the reception. Both of their moms are to credit for the deliciousness! WOW. And the plates on the tables were all hand-picked vintage-ware from the West Bottoms, antique stores and their own family collection. The yummy food was supplied by Vineyards Restaurant in Weston.ย  I was smitten to say the least.

This new family of four definitely started out their new chapter with a perfect day! I wish you all the best! Enjoy!

Two types of clients can make me feel so incredibly honored:
1. Those who come from out of town to Kansas city so I can document their family.
2. Fellow photographers.

So you can imagine how I feel that the K family hired me because they meet BOTH above criteria! Justin is a photographer himself in Columbia, Missouri.

He and Piper had a baby girl a year ago. Her gender was a complete surprise, though Justin and Piper both thought she’d be a boy. They referred to her as Hawk while in womb. When she was born, they followed a naming tradition in Piper’s family of naming based on something natural, so they opted for a name already in the family: Lane. They claim she is a super laid back and calm, and after spending two hours with them, I totally agree. She is downright calming compared to my high-energy toddler! But this could all change shortly once Lane starts walking. Lucky for me, she wasn’t quite mobile on her feet yet, which made for a much easier session. Since Justin is a photographer, they already have tons of photos of Lane alone. But not so much any of just Justin and her or the family as a whole. So that was my goal… with a few others added in. And huge thank you to Justin’s sister Sara for accompanying us and helping get Lane’s attention!!!!

So here goes it, K family. I hope you love and cherish these images…as evidence of the bittersweet milestone they commemorate. ๐Ÿ˜‰ And let me once again point out how much I love the color palette!! ๐Ÿ˜‰

There is only one type of event in life that is as emotional, as raw, as humbling and as powerful as that of a birth of a baby. I have only photographed one birth before this one, but was incredibly honored when the mother of one of my favorite brides from last year approached me about covering the birth of her first grandchild. I honestly originally expected for it not to work out, and that I would have to call in one of my back ups to cover the delivery because every weekend of the month before Blaire’s due date, I either had a wedding or was out of town. But somehow, by the powers that be, it all worked out when her induction date was scheduled for Friday, Sept 27.

The pitocin began that morning at 7, and by 9, Blaire was dilated to 3 cm. She got the relief from pain that she was craving a bit before 11 when her epidural was placed. I arrived at noon, and by then, Blaire was at 5 cm. She was quiet and serene in bed, with her eyes closed, resting in the peace that she knew would be gone in just a short while. Her husband, Austin, matched her level of calm from a bedside chair, his phone in hand, offering him all the distractions of technology.

The energy in the room was coming from Jo, Blaire’s mom, and Brooke, Blaire’s sister. Both were wired with excitement, and that excitement was contagious. Blaire’s dad too was a bit jittery, but his eyes were sparkling with anticipation and he offered a calming presence in the room. Brooke and Blaire have such a close relationship, that Brooke felt right at home curled up next to her sister on the bed, sometimes, her head would rest on the belly itself; she was always in tune with the nephew inside that she couldn’t wait to meet.

Blaire & Austin, being seriously the most chill couple I’ve ever met or worked with, welcomed the influx of visitors into the delivery room. Belly rubs, cell phone photos with said belly, jokes, gift-giving…they were all fair game and helped the mama-and-dada-to-be pass time with those they loved.

Things slowly progressed all afternoon. She dilated to a 7 by 1 p.m. and 90 minutes later, she was fully effaced and dilated. The nurse’s declaration of this fact was met with a round of cheers and tears from all the eager loved ones rooting them on. After a bit of pushing and not much progress, the doctor was able to tell that the Baby Beau was flipped sunny side up. Although this is something that isn’t a problem, so to speak, delivery goes much easier and more quickly if the baby is face down. So she suggested that Blaire turn over and rest on all fours for 45 minutes or so in hopes of turning the little guy over. Blaire wasn’t discouraged, but accepting, and she took on her new position with grace while her husband, friends and family took turns rubbing her back, feeding her ice and sharing with her text messages from those who couldn’t be there but were sending their positive thoughts.

I had thought the noise level was loud at the announcement that Blaire reached full dilation, but I had another thing a’coming. When the doctor came to check the baby’s position, and she cried out that he had indeed done his job and turned over for his mommy, the room literally erupted in squeals of victory. Blaire just calmly smiled, taking it all in.

So…as we joked… it was go time. Or was it SHOW time. Or…better yet… BEAU time!

With her sister holding up one leg and Austin holding her hand and proffering the oxygen mask in between pushes, with her mother breathing in unison and gripping her cheeks in palpable anticipation, with her grandmother and mother-in-law and sister-in-law and two friends clasping hands, jumping on the balls of their feet, peeking over the person ahead of them, updating relatives with texts, and becoming the best cheerleaders ever, Blaire pushed..and pushed..she tugged on a sheet to help focus her energy…and she pushed some more. She was proving herself a champ.

And at 5:39 p.m., Beau William became one of the most-loved lil’ guys ever to be.

There were few dry eyes and cheeks in the room. Pride, relief, pure joy. That’s what filled the room for the next hour..well, that and lots of cell phones snapping like crazy and a few innocent cries from Baby Beau.

So on Blaire & Austin’s one-year anniversary, they brought home the best anniversary gift they could imagine. And because I follow the family on Facebook, I can attest to the fact that he is VERY well cared for…and very well dressed. ๐Ÿ˜‰ Congratulations, Blaire & Austin! I am excited for our next session in a couple weeks. I hope you’re both loving your new roles as parents every day a little bit more. ๐Ÿ™‚

{I now invite you to experience birth photography in two different ways. For those who prefer the abbreviated version, just scroll through the pics below. For those who want to see a slideshow, to music, … and get the “full” story… click on the PLAY arrow…and turn the speakers on because let’s face it, music really tugs away at the heart strings. (and don’t worry, all pics have been posted with Blaire & Austin’s approval, so don’t expect anything that will make you turn away!!! It is just the beauty of a beautiful miracle.)
