Good neighbors are heard to find. Especially good neighbors who become friends. That is why Neil and I were so incredibly bummed in late 2011 when our pals Sara & Tad, who lived 2 houses away, moved back to Columbia,Β  MO. I was pregnant at the time, and we knew Sara & Tad would be growing their family soon as well. LUckily, we’ve stayed in touch and visited… and when they had their own son last December, I was over the moon when they asked me to document his newborn stage. So that I did. And was also over the moon with Baby Wyatt as soon as I met him. He looked like a Mini Sara…and had the sweetest lil’ nose I’ve ever seen on a baby! πŸ™‚

And then I got to take his 7-month pics too! They came to KC for that session this summer, and let’s just say, Wyatt knocked it out of the park with his gummy grins and endearing expressions.

I am blogging my faves from both sessions today… so enjoy seeing him as super tiny Wyatt…and then 7 months later!!! xo

So I am not too ashamed to admit that I totally had a crush on my bride and groom a few weeks ago. Kelsey & Nick. They are just so flipping gorgeous AND sweet AND fun AND gracious. Ali and I once again were in Topeka for their wedding day. Kelsey had been worrying about extreme heat, which of course is always a possibilityβ€”actually…a likelihood…for June weddings. But they lucked out because it was pretty cloudy all day long, and even rained a few timesβ€”during pictures! But this whole wedding party handled the moody weather changes with ease.

Kelsey is a nurse, which actually was to my benefit as when I met her and her mom last fall for a consultation, she was so completely understanding that I had to change the location of our meet up at the last minute because my son was sick with croup. So they came to my home, and with a toddler on my lap who was part out of it due to steroids, we chatted about the wedding they were planning.

The story of how Nick proposed is a good one! Here it is, in Kelsey’s words:

I had just finished my first day of my graduate classes (after working Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday night 7p-7a in the ER).Β Needless to say, I was quite tired.Β Even so, I was finally able to spend a little time with Nick. Β So we went out to eat with friends and then he asked me to fish with him behind my parents’ house. Β We had been fishing for 45 minutes or so when Nick asked me to get another lure out of his tackle box. Β He has many tackle boxes, so when I finally opened the right one, I didn’t recognize a ring box sitting in the middle. Β I asked which one he wanted and he leaned over and said, “This one.” Β He picked up the ring box, got down on one knee, and the rest is history.Β

Both Kelsey and Nick bleed athleticism. It’s in their genes. Nick’s dad was a high school football coach, and Kelsey’s dad is still the head basketball coach at Washburn University Β (he’s the 25th winningest coach in college basketball history!!! And as an aside, I really don’t think that WINNINGEST should be a word.) Kelsey is as tall as she is beautiful, but she chose a different court and a different school–she played volleyball for K State. Nick however followed in his father’s area of expertise and was a 1st team All Big 12 offensive Tackle at Kansas State. He even was drafted by the NFL and played a short time, but injuries prohibited him from continuing.

Because of both of their families’ ties to the Topeka community, they had lots of guests. Like…the most guests I’ve ever experienced at a wedding! And it was a beautiful one at that. From the romantic hues to the personal touches (check out what they threw instead of a bouquet or garter belt!!!), it was one to remember.

The ladies got ready at Kelsey’s parents’ house.

Kelsey & Nick—I hope your wedding day was every bit of magical that you wanted it to be. You were both so amazing to work with and not just because you rocked the camera. Thanks for EVERYTHING!! And happy EVER AFTER!

  • Cindy - Stunning indeed! Pics made their festivities look so FUN! Gorgeous couple!ReplyCancel

  • Darbi's Mom - YUMMY! These are beautiful! What a gorgeous couple! Fantastic job Darbi, as usual! You captured the best!ReplyCancel

From the minute this family of four got out of their car at Loose Park, my heart did a little pitter-pat. They were cute. And they were stylish. And I could tell they were what most of us want for ourselves–a fun, playful, genuinely kind family.

Gunnar is the newest addition to the O family. He joins big sister Miriam. And the collective unit makes for an exuberant group. Miriam kept me on my toes, and Rachael and Matt had me laughing, while Gunnar tugged on my heartstrings with his big ol’ eyes.

After I sent them their gallery of pics, Matt emailed me back and part of what he responded with was this:
“You did it! You captured our family!”

And that, my friends…that is what I aim to do. I don’t want posed and stiff. I make suggestions for the set-up, but from there, your silly little girl or your boisterous little boy or your too-sweet of a baby or you and your teammate-in-parenting take it. And as long as you’re positive and just be yourself, you will rock it.

Here are some (a lot) of my fave pics of the O fam shoot!!! ENJOY

  • Kate B - What a sweet SWEET family shoot. You captured some very beautiful and intimate moments.ReplyCancel

Go figure that I’m blogging Michelle & Colin’s wedding before their engagement session. I try to keep wedding blogs up to date because they take a lot more time to do… and I throw up a lifestyle/engagement shoot when there is a lull in wedding content.

So for now, these two are strangers to my blog, though they are far from that to me because I have worked with them before. They make such a fun pair. Colin is a playful, sarcastic guy who SAYS he hates having his photo taken..and even if that is the truth…he still sucks it up and gets through it because he loves Michelle so much. And Michelle is so chill, laid back and understanding. Their families and friends sure are fun to be around as well!

The day was pretty sticky out… it could have been hotter, but try to tell that to people who are already sweating. Yet they hung in there for outdoor pics, knowing the lighting is worth it! We were in Topeka, so took advantage of the gorgeous grounds of Gage Park.

One sweet moment of the day, which goes to show you how cool Michelle is about things, is when one of the darling flower girls was crying before the ceremony. It turns out that her shoes were really hurting her, but she was sad to tell the bride that, and she didn’t want to lose out on walking down the aisle. You know what Michelle did? She told all the flower girls to lose their shoes and walk bare foot down the aisle at church. Applause for the total opposite of bridezilla! I don’t know how I score such amazing couples.

So feast your eyes on these pics… and know that the impeccable touch on the day can be also attributed to Lyn Scardina…a phenomenal wedding planner! πŸ™‚

And other notes as the pics go! πŸ™‚

I am till behind with my lifestyle blog posts… so this lil’ cutie is now 2.5 months older than these pics.Β  I am so sorry!

This is Roman. He is a ham of many expressions. I giggled so much at all his faces. He is the product of one of my past brides and grooms, Heather & Landon, whom I just adore. Heather & I met back in college at Mizzou, and I am so thankful that we’ve kept in touch. They recently moved and I am sure they are so excited to turn their house into a home. Kids have a way of adding that “special” lived-in touch to any room. ha

For the session, since it was in MArch, we wanted to pick a location that would have indoor options if it were too chilly. So we did it at the downtown library, such a cool spot. For fun…count how many different expressions you see. And how photogenic is Heather? She is just a natural beauty, for sure. So jealous!

Heather & Landon–wishing you so many more joyful moments in the months to come with your precious ball of smiles. He’s going to be such a fun toddler. πŸ˜‰ I can’t wait to follow along on Facebook. Best wishes as you get settled into your new house. xo
