It really doesn’t get any better than this. Lindsay & Craig are every bit as sunshiney to work with as their session was springy. We nearly canceled the session due to the threat of high wind….but Lindsay promised she wasn’t one of those females who cares if her hair is perfectly untouched. So we went for it. AND OHHHHH am I so glad we did. I mean… come on. Flowering trees are ephemeral… and golden rays of sun coming through the branches of those flower trees? To witness it is euphoric!!

Craig & Lindsay met almost 4 years ago on eHarmony–and the start of their friendship consisted of the cyber world of communication. When they both happened to be in Tulsa, OK at the same time, they met up. They said they didn’t know what to expect, but their first meet-up led to their first kiss…..and many speeding tickets because from there, they forged a long-distance relationship that consisted of weekends traveling to see one another.

Lindsay had this to say about knowing Craig was THE one: “There wasn’t a certain time I could remember when I DIDN’T think he was the one. He was always willing to handle my “crazy” when it was showing and bring me back down to earth when I thought everything was going wrong. He was always and still is my rock. He is the first person I want to tell about my day, whether it’s good or bad. I also saw how he was with his niece and nephews. Family is a very big part of his life, as well as mine. Making that the focal point of your life made me realize that one day he will be that way with OUR family. BUT if I have to be specific, it was the day we decided we were going to both move to Kansas City together and see where the relationship took us. It was a huge step for the both of us to move out of our comfort zones, but we knew doing this would bring us closer and ultimately get married, make babies, and grow old together. I’d take a chance on him every day.”

Craig’s take? “I knew she was the one when we chose to move to Kansas City together. It was a big commitment and we didn’t hesitate with the thought. We had been long distant for far too long and I loved spending every single second with her. She was and still is full of laughter and love! It turned out to be the best decision of our life!”

So to seal the deal, Craig planned a New YEar’s Eve trip to Hermann, Mo., last December.  After getting settled in their room where they were staying, they opened up belated Christmas gifts, one of which came in a tiny black box. Lindsay’s hands were shaking as she opened it, and then next thing she knew, she was saying “Oh my god, are you serious? Are you serious?” Craig took the reins…and the ring… got on one knee and with tears in his own eyes, he popped the question. Lindsay didn’t say yes. She said: “OF COURSE!”  Lindsay says, “In that moment you think you’re going to say all of these whimsical lovey-dovey things, but when it comes to matters of the heart all you can do is look at each other.”  From there, they celebrated by sharing the news with their friends and family. And then they closed out 2015 with 3 bottles of wine and a bedtime that begin 2 minutes shy of 2016.

Such a darling story is perfect for this darling couple. I can’t say enough good things about how fun it is to work with clients like Craig & Lindsay. And I can’t say enough good things about how amazing it feels to photograph them against such a naturally gorgeous backdrop. So I’m going to let the pictures do the rest of the talking.

Sometimes, I’m so thankful for how things just tend to work out. Allegra and Aaron won my free engagement session that I gave away at January 2015’s bridal fair… and that in and of itself was amazing…(snowy, cold, and romantic!!).. I originally wasn’t able to shoot their August wedding, but gears shifted, tides turned, and voila! I was so happy that the stars aligned and I was able to document their beautiful event! I can’t believe I am just now blogging it. This fall was one for the record books in many ways, and I put blogging on the back burner. And before long, it just got so stale…that I gave up. But it’s a new year…so I’m going to skip ahead to this wedding solely because I’m working on their album right now and thought it’d be good to just immerse myself in all things Allegra & Aaron. So here’s my love note to this gorgeous couple….

I knew this wedding was going to be one that would consist of elements to truly bring the day together in a gorgeous way. Allegra had this to say about what her favorite part about wedding planning was, and it would make any photographer swoon:

My favorite part was definitely working on the details. I am awkwardly obsessed with pretty paper things and crafting things. I’ve enjoyed making small projects from the very beginning and now packing them up in preparation for the big day. I’m really really not one to handle having the attention all on me, but it really is so nice and touching to realize the love around you by all these different people. My maid of honor, Stacey, has been by my side through it all and willing to help with anything, as well as my wonderful mother. I love the support I have had from all my friends and my new sister-in-law and sister/cousin, Tessa. Even though it has gotten stressful at times, Aaron and I have been a really good team and I’ve enjoyed planning with him and incorporating the cool things he wants to do. It’s been another reassurance in us as a couple/team because we are very similar in our styles and our music..plus things I think are pretty cool, he does, too (or at least he tells me that…probably just to shut me up, but hey! I don’t blame him at times 😉

And with that… my love note…

Dear Allegra & Aaron,

Your wedding surpassed my expectations. I knew it would be lovely. And romantic. With lots of personable touches. But the effort and vision you two had in concert with your vendors enabled it to be beautifully executed. Mad props. I still get all fluttery in the heart when I think about my excitement to shoot it… and it’s what five months later??

I loved the color palette of mint, peach and gold. Fresh, fun, flirty and romantic. And combined with the talents of Angela from Poppy & Clover Floral Design, it set a mood that everyone adored. While I was taking photos of the table details, I heard so many guests ooh-ing and ahh-ing over the arrangements of lush florals in the soft hues, books and bunches of antique glassware. And my camera agreed.

Allegra, you thought of everything. And not just from the eyes of a bride, but you also considered photography when making decisions and setting things up. That’s always appreciated and leads to getting images that do us both proud.

I would sometimes see you, Aaron, looking at your modelicious bride with equal parts amusement and disbelief. As if you couldn’t quite let it sink in that you were getting to marry her. And Allegra was giddy around you, and I can tell that she looks to you as a source of calming as well as someone to team up with to tackle anything. And I’m sure you can see in the pics how perfect you two are together in the looks category too. May you always remember how you felt on that hot, humid day in August. Not the sweaty feelings…but the ones that propelled you both down that aisle after there ceremony with goofy grins on your faces.

One thing that stood out to me from your wedding was how many friends and family had so many good things to say about you both. Whether it was about you being so dependable or thoughtful as friends, or how your lovey-dovey antics were not so much nauseating as they were endearing… I really felt like everyone there put you both on playing level above everything else–that they looked up to you both (and not just because you’re so tall, Allegra!! 😉

From the minute Grace and I showed up to the Westin Crown Center, it was like this invisible force led us from one photo-worthy moment to another. We could feel the energy in the air and it never let up. We ran on the adrenaline that only being around a group of people who love one another creates. When a wedding is so full of emotions, beautiful elements and fun, sweet and ridiculously good-looking people, the camera and those of us who hold it seem to work in overdrive. And when it was all over, we’re out of breath and winded, in a daze from feeling as if we had experienced something epic… and epic it was.

I know that marriage will bring with it many parts that you can’t plan for, many parts that will be far from photo-friendly, and may parts that don’t match…. but in addition to coming away with amazing photos of the day as it unfolded, I also came away with a sense that you two are an inspiring duo–and together, you’ll put your own spin on this whole marriage thing. And I have a feeling it will be just as unique and exciting as your wedding was. Thank you for trusting me to document your day.

David and Bailey both work in finance, but in very different ways. The groom, a CPA; the bride is a financial counselor for couples seeking reproductive assistance through KU health care system. But before they were THEM together, they were Blue Jays. At Creighton University, that is. And both were very rah-rah team spirited… Bailey was on the dance team (she even won the MOST INSPIRATIONAL award in 2012!) and…drum roll…. David was the mascot… Billy the Bluejay. Tell me that isn’t a match made in blue & white heaven!!!? They met in the student center the night President Obama was elected in 2008. They talked all through the night. When he texted her two days later with “Hey Bay Bay, did you go to Spanish today?” something clicked in Bailey’s mind as she realized right then that he was “silly and kind and caring and just the perfect guy for me.”

David echoes that sentiment on the flip side. He says, “We have always made an effort to see each other every day and the fact that she still WANTS to do that after 6 years makes her THE one!

Before they could officially become one another’s one, one question had to be asked. David chose Bailey’s 24th birthday to do it. In her words, “He invited me to his apartment before a birthday lunch. When I got there, his apartment was spotless–which should have been a giveaway, but I was clueless. I asked if I could open my birthday present and he said yes. I opened up the box and it was a bottle of jewelry cleaner. By the time I looked up he was down on one knee and that’s when he asked me to spend the rest of my life with him.”

When they weren’t planning a wedding, and now in their post-betrothal lives together, they fill their free time with one another doing anything from playing with their puppy Jojo, going to St Louis Blues hockey games or Cardinal baseball games, and of course,  heading back to Omaha for Creighton basketball games. (David regrettably now attends Jay games in his own skin…). They also are enthusiastic season-ticket holders for the Starlight theater.

Dearest Bailey & David,

At the beginning of every wedding season, I wonder to myself if this is going to be the year I get any bridezillas. And at the end of the season, I realize I didn’t have ONE. Seriously. I have THE best clients. The sweetest brides. Good sports for grooms. Families who are loving and welcoming to ME! And bridal parties who make me feel like I could hang out with them.

But Bailey & David, your wedding took the Darbi G. norm to a new level. EVERYONE was so incredible amazing to work with… there were no tense moments at all. Bailey, you exuded graciousness, and David, you held true to your playful, charming self. Even when you were sweating intensely after the AC on your limo bus went out, you were laughing… rolling your…fanning yourselves, but never once did you become anything less that sweet and upbeat. I commend you both. 😉

I love that you used a color palette that meant something to you– blue and white…for Creighton. And yet, the wedding was anything but sporty in feel. Eloquent, romantic, fresh and lovely though? Yes. There were so many easygoing moments, sweet moments, funny moments and just simply happy moments. But perhaps the most entertaining moments of the day came during the father/daughter dance. Bailey, your dad was refreshingly and endearingly sentimental, tearing up a few times throughout the day, but the love he has for you became even more apparent when he kicked his inhibitions to the curb and partook in the dance you choreographed… He has mad skills! Seriously. I can’t believe I have an entire gallery of pics from your dance… here.

DAvid, it was so good to once again work with your family. {His brother was my groom 2 falls ago here in Kansas City! Clare was pregnant during the wedding but they have since added a precious little boy to the family. CONGRATS, GUYS!} That your parents and you trust me yet again to play such an important role in ensuring your wedding is treasured properly is incredibly flattering, and speaks to my main goal of my business–to be worth coming back to again and again.

I hope you’ve both enjoyed your newlywed-dom and I look forward to working with you on finding the perfect art for your walls! Thank you for being another ideal couple to work with, but for standing out in your own fun, silly and totally sweet ways. You two are the best!

xo,

Darbi
