I have been looking forward to Taryn & Kyle’s wedding since their engagement session. Click on their names to read their story of how they met and got engaged.

I tend to feed off the energy of my clients, and in this case, I knew it would be a fun day. And it was. There was just this all-around positive sense to the day. Ali and I actually felt relaxed and like part of the family…like we were guests who just happened to be shooting as well.

The weather threatened us with rain, but other than a brief downpour while we were all driving between venues, it turned out to be splendid. Taryn got ready at the home she grew up in just south of Overland Park. I was welcomed not only by a jovial group of well-wishers and bridesmaids, but by darling peppy decor. So as it turns out, Taryn is THE most organized bride I’ve ever worked with. Sometimes, when you know that going in, you expect a bit of feistiness, perhaps some bridezilla moments… but no. Taryn was sassy, yes. But she was always a ball of hilarity. I think one of my favorite moments of the day was when Taryn just got her dress on, sighs of awe were filling the room in the basement of the church as her girls and her mom looked on…she turned around, looking every-the-glamourous bride, her face grimaced and she confessed…. “Oh…I miss my sweatpants!”

So a few more notes about the day will be riddled through the blog post because there are a few and it’ll mean more when accompanied by the photos.

It’s not a new idea to do a ring shot in a flower. But these might be my fave ring shots I’ve ever taken because they are so simple, so sharp and gorgeous. Just like Kyle & Taryn. KansasCityweddingphotographer-TK-DeerCreek-064KansasCityweddingphotographer-TK-DeerCreek-002KansasCityweddingphotographer-TK-DeerCreek-003

I think a bride should consider herself very luck if she scores a great groom. And Taryn did. But brides should also count their lucky stars if they land an awesome last name. And that she did too!!!!!

blogDarbiGPhotography-043114-1-029Kyle wrote such a sweet letter to Taryn and surprised her with a one-night stay at a hotel in Lawrence during their stay-cation since they are waiting a bit for their honeymoon. He’s such a romantic guy. He knows what women like. 😉 And Taryn knows what Kyle likes. She said he’s always telling her he thinks she’s prettiest without makeup. So that, plus fear of crying and ruining her makeup, is why she wanted to read his “gift” before she was dressed. Isn’t she a pretty crier?

Getting ready for them isn’t so strenuous. Life isn’t fair. KansasCityweddingphotographer-TK-DeerCreek-013KansasCityweddingphotographer-TK-DeerCreek-014KansasCityweddingphotographer-TK-DeerCreek-015KansasCityweddingphotographer-TK-DeerCreek-016In this here envelope, they trusted the best man with the rings. 🙂

Again, the simplicity of these bouquets overwhelmed me with joy. This is the crew’s interpretation of such. KansasCityweddingphotographer-TK-DeerCreek-031KansasCityweddingphotographer-TK-DeerCreek-032These two. Sigh. They just fold together so well like origami paper. PRetty much anything they did was a “Stop, don’t move!” moment…followed by shutter snap after shutter snap.

And Taryn and Kyle bowled us over with sweetness by assigning us a table with their PARENTS. Seriously. How do I get these amazing clients?

The looks these two exchanged during the toasts told so many stories. Of love. Of friendship. Of new beginnings. Taryn & Kyle–thank you soooo much for having me there on your big day. You two are so much fun, as has been drilled into readers’ heads over and over… and you have been wonderful to work with. So were your friends and family. Thank you for already writing a rave review before you’ve even seen many pics. If I could leave brides and grooms reviews somewhere, I’d do it. So I’m doing it here. I wish you a wonderful first summer as husband and wife. And hope to stay in touch!! xo

  • Kate B - Oh. My. Gosh. Why have I not seen these until now? These are STUNNING. You tell such a great story before the wedding. And the b/w of the bride and groom? STUNNING!!!ReplyCancel

A few couples a year book me without ever meeting me. Usually this is because they live out of town. In these cases, I advocate for meeting them before the wedding at least. Darryl & Kelsi live in Nashville, TN, so I didn’t get the pleasure of having an in-person consultation with them before they booked. But through email and then a pre-wedding week lunch with beautiful Kelsi & her adorable mom, I became a bit more familiar with the two who were going to wed on May 16 at the always-gorgeous Hawthorne House in Parkville, MO. (Darryl was unable to get to town for the lunch.) The lunch was all we needed to feel comfortable with one another completely. I had such a great time chatting about so many topics, very few of which were wedding-related. I *love* when I land clients who make me feel like I’ve known them forever.

So let’s begin at the start of Kelsi & Darryl’s love story. Three years ago Darryl’s friend picked him up from the airport after being gone for two months. Kelsi was along for the ride. And from there, a friendship fostered and the more time they spent together as just pals, the more they realized there was something there. Kelsi jokes, “It wasn’t love at first sight. I guess he kinda grew on me over time. Ha!”

As for Darryl, he says he knew shortly after they started dating that Kelsi was a keeper. “It was unlike any other relationship I had been in, though, so I knew it was something different and special. We were friends first, and I knew it was something different because around her I was able to be my complete self with no inhibitions. In other words, it was easy. I suppose there were specific times I looked at her and said yes she’s the one, particularly after a couple church services, I know. But it has been an evolution, one that has led to this point and continues to grow.”

Does Darryl sound like a romantic? Well he is…which goes hand in hand with one of his jobs–that of a singer/songwriter in the Nashville country music circuit. When I learned of this, I inquired if he would be singing at their wedding. Kelsi laughed and shrugged, saying that he might but it wasn’t guaranteed. Apparently he didn’t want that kind of attention on their wedding day…or so he said.

The same could not be said for the evening he proposed. Here is the tale of the bling, from his perspective:  “I planned a getaway in Hilton Head, SC. She thought it was just a random getaway but I had other ideas. I wasn’t sure how I would propose up until the day we got there. Figured I might just do it along the beach or something. But I made reservations at one of the nicest restaurants there, The Old Fort Pub, for the night we showed up, which happened to be our two and a half year anniversary. I had written her a song and brought my guitar on the trip. I called the restaurant before we were to show up and asked if I could play my girlfriend a song in the restaurant because I was going to ask her to marry me. They said they actually had a viewing deck on the third floor that people go to after dinner to drink wine and watch the sunset. So we had dinner right on the water, and the staff helped transport my guitar up to the 3rd floor deck so it was waiting for me, unbeknownst to her of course. After dinner I asked Kelsi if she wanted to go upstairs to watch the sunset and when we got up there my guitar was waiting for me. I got down on a knee and played the song I wrote for her, appropriately titled “Will You Marry Me”. She cried; I cried. After the song I gave her the ring and she accepted. It couldn’t have gone more perfectly. And the best thing was she had no clue I was even remotely thinking about asking her to marry me.”

Smitten yet? Well he surprised Kelsi with a studio recording of that same song for their FIRST DANCE at the reception, even though she has previously thought they would be dancing for the first time as husband and wife to “Feels like Home” by Chantal Kreviazuk. There were tears and double-cheeked smiles throughout the ballroom. It gave me CHILLS. (He has a PHENOMENAL voice…and mad skills. ha Check him out here.)

Anyway, be sure to read a few other notes as the photos go… but this wedding was so charming through and through. Enjoy!

So crazy that two weddings in a row, the brides had similar parent gifts!!! These sweet notes to Kelsi’s mom and dad made me tear up.Wedding-Parkville-HawthorneHouse-012

Darryl was adamant about not seeing Kelsi until she was walking down the aisle on the way to hold his hand in marriage. BUT, they wanted to pray together beforehand. So Ali and I orchestrated a prayer so they couldn’t see one another. And this was another indication of just how sentimental the groom was. More tears for me!! (I am a huge softy anymore!! The guys were adamant about jumping…so I thought I’d spice up the “jump” pic that is so popular with some bridal parties. Each one took their chance to shine…and some shone a bit brighter. 😉 hahaha

A veteran of my blog for sure, this family breeds the definition of cute. Literally. My dear pals, Gina & Zach, added another member this past April. Baby Reid joins Toddler Evan. Evan and my precious son, Weston, are buddies already, and now that there is another boy in the mix, we parents talk of the mischief that is down the road for all of us!

I have had such an incredible honor of watching Gina & Zach become the wonderful parents that they are today. And now they have another bambino to apply their mad skillz to… I am so proud of them!

I hope you enjoy these images of Reid that we took around the 3-week mark in their home on a very cloudy day. Reid proved to be the easiest baby to date that I’ve worked with. Score! 😉

After being on a wedding hiatus through the winter months, it is always my hope that the first wedding of the season will be one that inspires me so I can start it all off on a good note. I wasn’t worried this year as I knew Kelli & Chris would deliver. From the lovely dress, a refreshing color palette, peppy bridal party members and of course a charming and good-looking couple (well…actually…the two of them call the other one “pretty”…haha), we had it all!

Kelli is by far the most boisterous bride I have ever worked with. Her energy level makes a Jack Russel terrier seem lethargic. When I walked through the locker room at Indian Hills Country Club, all the bridesmaids were getting ready, but it was a loud squeal and cheer from Kelli that made me almost drop my camera gear. She was so pumped to see me, and her enthusiasm was contagious. And after having witnessed she and her lady pals singing YOU LIGHT UP MY LIFE at the top of their lungs, I will never hear that song again and think of anything else. 😉

Other things I loved about the day:

Once again, I was thrilled to be working with a dress that had straps. I just love that style!!!

Indian Hills Country Club was such a beautiful venue with a great staff!!! (and yummy food!!)

Kelli’s gift to her dad was really moving. You’ll see it below.

There were several grandparents in attendance, which is actually a rarity at weddings. These two are so luck to have their grandmas and pas there for their big day!!

I have a fond memory of my first-ever run-in with a rosebush. During the wedding party pics at Loose Garden, I was so “into” the moment, that I backed up without looking and walked right into thorns. I actually bled a bit on my leg! But guess we got some genuine smiles out of the crew, no?

The reception was a blast! So many people danced. And some good dancers. Some funny ones. But all were just fun to photograph!

Their first dance was one of the most romantic ones I’ve ever photographed because they wouldn’t stop nuzzling. That is such a great thing to see!!!

Kelli & Christopher have seriously been so delightful to work with. Not only have they literally welcomed me with open arms, but they were so gracious, accommodating, trusting and great sports through the entire process. And I can’t count the number of times they said they appreciate me. Which means SOOOO much and I cannot appreciate THEM enough because of that.

I wish you both sooooo much joy and fun and laughter and giggles…and should you ever run into a rosebush, may you not bleed toooo much. 😉  Xoxoxoxo

AND…

***NOTE***** I just now realized I never blogged their engagement session!!! AHHHHHHH! I sooo thought I did! I will be doing that soon, SO SORRY. I could have sworn I did. GRRRRR!*****************
