A decade has passed since Ann & Matt met one another during their senior year in high school. There wasn’t insta-love; in fact, both had been in relationships when their paths crossed. But once they each broke up with their respective significant others, they found their way back to one another and spent the last summer before college side by side. They attempted to forge through long distance while Ann Tigerrrred it up at Mizzou and Matt took to Boston College. And it was hard to spend so much time apart, wondering if they were missing out on the college experience in order to spend time “together” on the phone. But be it as it may…several breakups later, it was clear that not being a couple was even harder.

When Ann  decided to continue her owneducation with grad school in Beantown, Matt decided he wasn’t going to let her go it alone. So he moved back to Boston in 2009, which made their future TOGETHER that much more inevitable.

As usual, proposal stories are always best when directly from the couple. This is Ann’s version of the day Matt solidified their future with a bit o’ bling…

I discovered that Matt was ring hunting,  and once he knew that I knew, he then kept me slightly updated on his hunt (i.e., “went to another store today but didn’t like the sales person… no one can believe you’re a size 3…etc.”). He told me when he bought the ring, but was ambiguous about when it was going to be ready for pick up. Soon after, he was acting very romantic around my birthday (Nov. 16) saying he was going to make dinner reservations, bake a pie, AND that he had multiple gifts to give me. I kept asking, “So is this going to be a birthday I’ll ALWAYS remember?!” and he kept telling me to not get my hopes up because the ring wasn’t ready yet. I didn’t believe him and the entire night of my birthday I thought he was going to propose — I even thought the ring might be in the apple pie he baked. Turns out, he was telling the truth. Then, about week later, we decided to book a last minute trip to New Hampshire over Thanksgiving weekend. We came up with the idea together and planned all of the activities together – so I wasn’t too suspicious. Just to be sure I even asked him again, “So… will this be a Thanksgiving worth remembering?!” and he just laughed saying, no, the ring still wasn’t ready. And this time I believed him.The first day that we made it to New Hampshire, we bought a hiking map from a gas station and chose a short/easy hike to do before checking into our hotel. We didn’t realize before, but the halfway point of the hike was at the top of a mountain with a beautiful view. There were several other groups of people up there taking pictures when we got to the top. Eventually the other people left the area and Matt took the opportunity to get on his knee and propose! I was completely surprised. Neither of us really remember what he said or what I said in the moment.

and with that…any move they made down the road, the two knew it would be together. Ann had no qualms about taking her speech pathology career from one coast to the other when Matt got offered a film-production job on an HBO film (How cool? it’s Larry David’s new movie CLEAR HISTORY!) so the City of Angels also became the City of Ann & Matt. (He now is working on post-production for the acclaimed TV series THE LEAGUE.)

This brings us to their wedding day. A few things I LOVED:

It was my first Greek Orthodox wedding (at Annunciation in South Kansas City). I was astounded at how beautiful the church was inside–all the reds and golds–so majestic. And the traditions of the ceremony were equally as humbling.

The sun refrained from being a scorcher that day, despite the forecast of quite the opposite. It was still humid and sticky as all get out, but the clouds at least kept the ultra-burn at bay.

I was so excited to once again work with HITCHED PLANNING & FLORAL.

I had a crush on the bouquet. I mean, come on! there was cotton in it! (See Hitched link above. Those ladies are creative visionaries!)

Ann’s dress was so classic, with a vintage flair. And the straps and upper back lace were so flattering on her. I love when brides venture from strapless gowns for something a bit different!

all the ladies had such pretty hair styles and makeup. Thanks to CaraSue!

The color palette was so refreshing. Navy, grey, yellow and light blues. YUMMY, no?

The ties on the gents were fun and modern!

They had fun “yard games” to play at the cocktail hour, including a bean bag toss.

Ann’s step dad (who is hilarious, FYI…) also is HANDY with craft projects. 😉 He welded (???? is that the right term? haha) the COOL M & A sign outside the reception site and made the wood slices, cake stand, bean bag toss. And Ann & her mom made the paper flowers, JUST MARRIED banner, cake topper and lots of other personal touches. CRAFTINESS runs wild in their family!

The HOBBS is one of my favorite reception venues. Feasts of Fancy, the caterers for the HOBBS, never fail to impress my eyes OR my taste buds.

The entire day was just so FUN and easy-going. No drama. No snafus. Ali and I really enjoyed working with everyone. And watching everyone dance two special Greek dances was so thrilling. I almost got squished a few times (no one said wedding photography was not a dangerous gig!!!) but I was laughing all the while and seeing Ann fit in so well to MAtt’s Greek culture was heart-warming. No matter where their careers take them, they know their hometown of Kansas City is here with big, loving arms!!!!

Enjoy their pics! And leave them some comment love, pretty please. 🙂

The following is a post as part of Project 2996, in which I originally participated several years ago. I have decided to post it for the fifth year in a row because doing so underscores how much I think it is important that we don’t forget there are faces, there are stories, there are left-behind loved ones to every name of every victim that was taken from us on that fateful day 12 years ago.

I’ve tweaked it a bit, after having received a book three years ago called “REQUIEM: Images of Ground Zero” in the mail from Gary’s sister, Christine, who read my 2009 blog post. (Christine, if you ever read this, thank you sooooo much for sending it to me…it had gone to an old address of mine, but it ended up getting to me a bit later!!!)

In the decade plus two years that have passed, so much has happened in this country. And to each one of us on a personal level. We should always keep in mind every day how very fragile life is. I would appreciate if all of you to read below and think for a moment about the man whose name I was given in the original project efforts, and the 2,995 others whose names are just as important, including those on United Flight 93 that went down by Stonycreek Township, Pennsylvania, near my husband’s hometown of Latrobe.
——————————————–

Twelve years ago today, the nation was rocked to its core. At the hands of hateful cowards. At the cost of nearly 3,000 hearts, minds and bodies. 4,380 days have passed, and so easy it is for many of us to move on. To focus on the patriotic spirit that rose out of that grim, ill-fated September day… to harness our own hatred in the name of the U.S. of A. and aim it at the sources of evil. Or to just put in our crosshairs people in our own country who have different beliefs or different colored skin or different political views. To literally FORGET what it really means to be an American.
But it has not been easy for those who were left in the wake of the tragedy, left to deal with a senseless loss of someone they loved, someone who loved them. Time might heal, but healing is hard to do when the loss always feels like it just took place yesterday. And time doesn’t bring back any one’s father, mother, sister, brother, husband, wife or best friend.
As part of Project 2996, I would like to shine a light on one man of whom, until Sept 10 of 2009, I had never heard…but now after reading about him and hearing the memories of those he left behind, I understand how important it is that he is remembered. That he is honored. Now, 12 years later, and every year thereafter.
His name is Gary P. Geidel, and he was a fireman for New York City Fire Department. He was one of 10 in his company who died in the aftermath of the terrorist attacks. He was 44.
Firefighting was in his blood. His father had walked before him; one of his brothers walked beside. All three Geidels shared a rescue company, Rescue Co. 1, which dates back to 1915 as the first rescue company to be established in the United States. Unfortunately, Gary was no stranger to responding to terror attacks; when the Twin Towers were bombed in 1993, Gary and his company were there, eager to save lives and help others.
His retirement from public service was a mere 20 days away when the calendar turned to September 11 in 2001. He awoke that morning, ruefully told his wife of almost 11 years that he put in for overtime and headed to the firehouse. But not before returning to give the love of his life another kiss and hug.

Their last kiss and hug.

Gary was a 6 ft. 2 romantic, avid birdwatcher, Eagle Boy Scout, former Marine and a member of a neighborhood softball and football team. He could fix parachutes, sew costumes, whittle gifts for loved ones and make toys for his daughter, Tillie. (At one point in the years since I’ve been doing this, Tillie contacted me through blog comments and on Facebook, and each time it warmed my heart that she has been touched by this small shout-out to the noble acts of her dad. Tillie, thank you for reaching out. And best wishes to you and your family!!)
Even if it’s just through memories, I’m glad I’ve come to know about Gary P. Geidel, who some called “Mule Bone.”
Many called him a friend.
Three called him a son.
Three called him a brother.
Some called him an uncle.
One called him a husband, a best friend, a soul mate.
One called him Dad.
And I know am not alone when I call him a hero.

Please remember Sept 11, 2001. And please remember Gary P. Geidel.

Back in late May, Neil and I decided to take our first family vacation (not counting visiting either of our families!!) to Chicago. And we chose to do a road trip. With our 16-month-old. In planning our route, we were eager to find good places where we could stop and break up the long long long drive. Did I mention we had our 16-month-old? 😉

Well, a lightbulb went off when  we saw that Des Moines would be a good break on the way back. That’s because a friend of mine recently moved there from Omaha. And she had a baby back in October. AND…she had recently expressed the desire to have me shoot her family sometime if it could ever work out.

YAY, it worked out! We ended up staying with them after the hotel we booked was a total yucko…and the next morning, I got to capture this sweet stage in Baby Leo’s life. Sarah and Jason have such a beautiful home (and if it had been, oh I don’t know..spring-like weather??? Qe would have ventured outside a bit more, but it was COLD! IN MAY!!!) that Sarah claims is mostly due to Jason’s decorating touch. Nicely done!!!

We had such a great time with this family, and Leo was such a cute lil’ dude. Every image, I kept changing my mind whom he looks like more… so you decide. 😉 But regardless, he’s a stud muffin. And Weston definitely enjoyed meeting a “baby”… and playing with the buckles in his car seat. haha

Anyway…Sarah and Jason, thank you sooo much for your hospitality and for your business. You have such a darling family started and I hope I get to work with you all again. Or at least play more board games. 😉 xo to you all!!!!

My sophomore year of college was a transitional one for me in many ways. I broke up with my  high school sweetheart and started a second year living in the dorms–not something that is super common. I didn’t know my roommate before we met on that first day in a 13×13 square room with concrete walls. She was cute and reminded me of Winnie from Wonder Years. (And she’s heard that a million times!!) We got along, but we didn’t get one another. We kept our distance for the most part, though we were civil and as accommodating as our selfish-college-aged selves could be while sharing our personal space. It wasn’t until February 14 of our 9-month stint as dorm mates that Cara and I actually became friends. I was heartbroken, on Valentine’s Day, and she invited me out with her and a few other girls from the dorm. I went. And I am ever so thankful I did. Somehow, walls had been up around us, shielding our true selves from each other… and we just needed an excuse to break them down. And ever since, I’ve come to know Cara as the most dependable friend I have. She’s caring. She’s stylish. She’s playful. She’s loyal. And she is fun. That’s why she is and always will be one of my best friends.

I was so beyond happy to learn she was going to be a mom, just a bit more than a year after I became one myself. Cody and Cara are two of the most deserving people I know, and they have so much love to give their son Owen. He is a Cinco De Mayo baby… so you can bet on the fact that someday, i will get a good pic of him in a sombrero! (I couldn’t find any cute ones for his small of a head!!)

I wasn’t able to make it back to St. Louis for his newborn pics, so we opted for his almost-3-month photos instead. These images warm my heart, and knowing how happy Cara and Cody are to be experiencing the very love that NEil and I get to experience every day makes my own happiness surge. I am so excited we get to raise our boys together, even if 4 hours apart!

Cara & Cody & Owen: I love you all! I can’t wait to see O again. He’s beautiful. And bouncy. And knowing his mama,  he’ll be sassy and mischievous too!

Enjoy some of my faves!!!

We interrupt this programming because my son interrupted the shoot. He wanted to see the “bay-bee.” ::)Ok, back to the main event!
