I am straying from my “catch-up posts” because I am thinking I’ll fill in with the ones that have gotten stuck in queue, but since this is a brand new session, I’ll start fresh here and try to keep up SOMEwhat for the start of this shoot season. So if you’re reading this and you’ve yet to be blogged from 2012 or earlier this year, hang tight!! 🙂

So anyway…. This family has become so special to me… My first shoot with them was in the late summer of 2011.

Since then, I have photographed them 3 other times. Today’s post marks the FIFTH time in less than 2 years that I have turned my lens on them. If ever a family existed that truly understands the value in capturing the early milestones of their beloved children, it is this one. And through these shoots, I have fallen head over heels for Adelyn (2 and a half) and Kate (who just turned 1), in addition to forminga kinship with Laura & Chris…one that has bloomed into a friendship. I couldn’t want better clients…. they are the epitome of the type of family I want to attract with my lifestyle photography.

Yeah, yeah, yeah…they are cute. That’s just a plus. The other reasons are as follows:

1. They “get” what it means to truly connect with the one they trust to document their family.

2. They appreciate photos  don’t always have to look picture-perfect to a stranger’s eye. There are no fronts with them.

3. They might trade in the girls’ daycare play clothes for darling attire, but do not be fooled. This family of four is so real, so genuine, so full of love and patience, that I admire them through and through.

4. I was excited that for this session, they opted to invite me into their home. I wasn’t there more than 90 minutes for this shoot. But in that 90 minutes, our goal was to merely hang out and not push any major photographic agenda. You know how rare that is?

5. Their favorite images from the day won’t be the same as other people’s favorites. They value the images, they FRAME the images, that speak to them as a family full of love, ornery lil’ girls, and delightful smiles. My heart sighs when I get the inevitable email from Laura that outlines which pics she will treasure most and why. (Yes, Laura, that means I’m expecting yet another one! hahaha)

So when you look at these images, look at them from the perspective of the mom and dad…who admit without shame that their life is a bit unmanageable at times, outright chaotic at others, but it’s always always always cherished.

  • Darbi's Mom - Oh yes, I remember this family so well! Adorable they are! The oldest one looks just like Daddy and the little one looks just like Mommy. YOu did a beautiful job, Darbi of catching what happens on a daily basis in a busy home where there are little ones. Gorgeous!ReplyCancel

One of my favorite engagement sessions took place last October. I have shot before in the Crossroads Arts District, but this time, we explored alleys I’ve never gone down before and these two were crazy. Jacky was a good balance of glam meets edgy. And Derek was one smitten guy, darn adorable  himself. These two, hands down, make for an incredibly attractive couple. But they’re not just looks. They have personalities that totally inspired me from beginning to end. They were game for anything…they were goofballs…sassy….flirtatious…and playful…….and totally  showing their love for Kansas City by rocking their surroundings. The last pic–the owners of the building came out and told us that the mural was BRAND new…and we were the first to take pictures in front of it. Score!!!

Anyway, enjoy these pics… of a truly picture-perfect bride and groom to be! (I was going to note my faves, but then I realized I was writing that on nearly half of the pics, so I thought I’d just tell you I really do love them all!!!)

Two years ago, Neil and I visited a new church here in the Kansas City area, seeking a place that would let us grow, modify and explore our faiths and those of others, without any dogmatic parameters. Without taking this blog post too much down a personal path, suffice it to say, everything we  had been looking for in a spiritual community was found at Shawnee Mission Unitarian Universalist Church. I had no idea such a truly welcoming and open-minded church existed. We were struck immediately with the feeling that we were home, and much of that had to do with the minister, Rev. Thom. He was approachable, incredibly well-versed in all religions and political issues, genuinely personable and his sermons from week to week really hit home with us.

It was perfect timing, as we soon after discovered that we were expecting our first baby. And when Rev. Thom and his wife, Anne (who is perhaps one of the most sweet people I’ve ever met!!!), announced a few months later that they too would be stepping into new roles as parents for the first time, I was very excited.

Thom had me shoot his headshots for the church web site and wall … and they called on me a few weeks after baby Lydia was born to document their new family of three. Incredibly honored, I showed up in November and was immediately enamored with their daughter. Her hair! Her round, alert eyes! She looked like a mini- Anne…as you’ll totally agree. And might I add, she was THE chillest baby I’ve ever worked with. I don’t even know if I ever heard her cry the entire time I was there.

Here are some of my favorite images from our time together. I am so lucky that I get to see her grow up too because she just gets cuter and cuter and cuter and cuter. And you don’t think it’s possible…and then I see her the next Sunday and her lil’ gummy grin gets me all over again!

Although this is late in posting, once again…congrats to Thom & Anne for being part of the most rewarding and challenging club ever–that of a parent! 😉

One of my close friends, whose family has appeared on this blog several times before, shares something with me that I think has only brought us closer. We’re both moms…and moms of BOYS. Evan is 7 months older than my Weston. And it’s always been so cool to see Gina and Zach walk the line before us. I seek them out for advice ALL the time. As the boys grow up, we can only hope they will become just as good of friends as Gina and I have become.

We had a mini Halloween shoot with them back in October. Gina proposed doing something for Valentine’s day…dressing them up and playing up their cuteness. And since it’s my slow season, I perked up. We had grand visions of a kissing booth and mailboxes full of fan mail. And perhaps someday we’ll bring that one to life. But since Weston’s first b-day part was just the week before this, I could only take on so much in terms of developing the scene. Gina rocked her end of the deal though and made the banners…which turned out perfectly!

It didn’t go exactly as planned (does it ever when kids under the age of 4 are involved?!)…but we definitely came away with some keepers. I think our lil’ studs look so darn darling that I could just pinch myself in hopes that this isn’t a dream. I think i speak for Gina when I say these boys are the LOVES of our lives. They are the most special Valentines we could ever ask for…and no cupid is needed! (We love our husbands too of course…but come on…our husbands don’t look THIS good in bow ties and newsboy hats!!)

So please enjoy  a lil’ dose of lovable fun on this holiday for loves of all kinds….

Gina and Neil had their share of work cut out for them……

(please note something different in the far right pic…can you spot what held Evan’s attention???)But I got him to sit for ONE more…kinda.

Ahhh… at last. Another lovely fall session making its way to the blog just in time for… spring? 😉

This engagement session ends up being one of my faves for a few reasons. I always enjoy shooting at Nelson Atkins… but I also LOVE shooting people I haven’t seen in a long time. Beth and I went to high school together in Omaha. She was a year under me… in my brother’s class. So it’s been way too long since we’ve walked the halls of Omaha North (when we realized the # of years, we both decided to not mention it again. hahaha) How crazy that she’s ended up in Kansas  City too (something I didn’t know until we had a phone consultation! I had been under the impression she was in Omaha, which is why we didn’t’ meet in person. haha)

Anyway, she has grown up to be such a beautiful person! And I am so glad she’s found a guy who knows just how lucky he is.The two met here in Kansas City….and in a way that sounds odd. They lived together. Sort of. Beth needed a place to stay when she first moved here, so she decided to stay with the brother of  her good friend. Well, that brother had another roommate, and his name was Tom. Their relationship unfolded under no guises. Beth was very obviously into him, and Tom called her out on it. (They say this bluntness continues today and is something they are thankful for!)

Things just worked for them. Even when Tom’s job took him to Omaha, they stuck it out long-distance. And in time, Tom upped the ante. Here is their proposal story from Beth’s perspective. I laughed when I heard it….because I think for a month or so, my husband can commiserate with what Beth was tuned into a bit too much. 😉

Tom took me on a surprise date. I was told to get dressed and pack an overnight bag. However, he wasn’t very helpful when I asked what type of clothes to bring. It was very stressful since I only had so many outfits to choose from since I was up in Omaha and only brought a couple outfits for the extended weekend. I was told no skinny jeans, heels or a dress, but to look nice. We went to the grocery store and bought some food for dinner. We then headed out to Mahoney State Park where he rented a cabin for us. We spent the day walking around and exploring the park. We even went up to the top of the observation tower. I sat on the bench in the middle of the tower because I was too scared to go near the edge. Tom walked around the whole tower and laughed at me a little. We then decided to go to the restaurant instead of cooking. At this time Words With Friends was a big deal and I was a little obsessed with it and my new iPhone that Tom bought me as a birthday present. I was playing it throughout dinner and didn’t think too much of it. (I don’t think I realized how bad my obsession was.) We then went back to the cabin and started a fire. It was a bit of a process because the firewood we bought was a little damp. Once Tom finally got the fire going he dimmed the lights. I was on my phone playing Words With Friends completely oblivious to what was happening. He was trying to propose and had to take my phone away. I am definitely not proud of that! But, he got down on one knee and asked me to marry him. I said, “Yes!”

Moral of the story: PUT DOWN YOUR PHONES, PEOPLE! Something amazing might just happen. LIke…you might get a diamond! And a life-long best friend! 😉 haha

This session was entirely too windy, but never when we WANTED the wind to rip through. I love how Beth embraced it and let her hair just go with it. And their personalities really came out during these photos. I can’t wait to see them again in late April (my first wedding of this year!!!) up in Omaha. I might just have to get a pic of Beth on her phone. ;)Enjoy my favorites from their session!!!
