A bittersweet post this is…only because it is the post-12-month session for the son of one of my best friends. He actually turned 1 back in July, but we bumped his session to September. And now, here it is, the end of November. And lil’ Evan is even a bigger boy now! WAHHHHHHH! SOB!!!

He also was recently on this blog for being the super-suave and FREAKING adorable ringbearer at a wedding last month.

Evan means more to me than most kiddos do. His coming into this world last summer was just the beginning. He is the one that got me excited to have a son of my own. He is the one whom I envision being besties with Weston. He is the one who has been the source of countless laughs and lotsa cuddles. The first diaper my husband ever changed was Evan’s. Watching Neil read Evan a bedtime story (when I was 7 months pregnant myself) put me over the edge with anticipation to see my husband become a father.

So bottom line…he is special. I am sappy thinking about how he went from precious faux-hawked newborn to a giggly lil’one to an ADORABLE boy…an actual mini adult–a KID! From his hair, to his super cool attitude…(and the way he rocks the dapper clothes his mama dresses him in!)…to the fact htat he reaches out for me when I see him…he’s a charmer through and through. I am soooo thankful that I got to capture Evan’s first year in official portraits. Here’s to a second one!

And now, playdates with the two of them just make Gina and I even more excited to watch their friendship bud. And it better bud, or else… 😉 I want to start out the post with a pic or two of Evan and Weston together about a month ago. And then it’ll all be about Evan. Because he’s that awesome.
And I happened to LOVE this pic of Gina and Evan. She’s sooo gorgeous. And Weston already has a crush on her. 😉

Evan decided to throw Weston OUT of the car. hahahahaOk, the shoot is on!

  • Darbi's Mom - These pictures are priceless! Evan is just adorable! Such a cute little family! Darbi, you did a beautiful job capturing so many precious shots of Gina, Zach and Evan!ReplyCancel

I bet not many relationships start over a nose. But Stefanie & Ryan’s did. NINE YEARS AGO!!  They met in a bar, but after, as Stef puts it, Ryan was staring at her like weirdo, she took it upon herself to talk to him. He confided that he loved her nose. (Yes, now everyone will be looking at Stefanie’s nose in these pics like no one has done before on my blog! ha) She does indeed have nicely shaped protuberance, don’t you think? 😉

From there, they exercised other body parts and went out for pizza and mini golf and golf carts with his friends…and Stefanie was smitten with that kind of fun! Would you also believe that other than during college at Southwest MO State (now Missouri State U), these two weren’t in the same city until just 3 years ago. They had broken it off for a bit, but then two years ago, Ryan moved back here and after seeing the love of his life in a yellow pea coat, he pretty much knew he’d be insane to let her go.

This past May, Ryan surprised Stefanie with a trip to Chicago for her birthday… and a proposal on the bridge that goes over the river. (If there is more than one, I apologize as I do not know the name! hahaha) Of course she said yes… Who would turn down a guy like Ryan? Rumor has it,  he’s a catch—-a sports fanatic who doesn’t get suicidal when his teams lose; he’s a great writer who has a sense of humor that literally makes you laugh out loud and also wish that you were that funny [no surprise that his dream job is to be a comedian!!]; plus he’s thoughtful…the length to which he went to give Stef a weekend she’d never forget in Chi-town is impressive!

Ryan is unashamed to admit that Stefanie is his best friend. They might work out (as in EXERCISE) separately, but together they love dining out, sipping on vino, going bike-riding, traveling and catching up on Dexter, Homeland, Big Brother and… Real Housewives. Yes, you read that right. 😉 (RYan don’t  hate me for outing you!! You just got mad props from the ladies* who are all now turning to their men and saying, “See? Ryan watches it!!”) [*note: I myself do not watch Real Housewives, but I cannot judge you two as I do fall victim to the Bachelor/ette series. Until this season. BOO, SEAN!]

Anyway, I hope you enjoy some of my fave pics of their session. It was the first time shooting an engagement center at Park Place in Leawood, and we had such a good time before these two crazy adult kids had to get to work! These two are sure to show me a fun wedding next June!

one of my fave pics EVER!!! (below)

  • Chris Crandell ( Stefanie's Mom ) - Awesome photo’s Darbi!! Looking forward to the wedding in June!!ReplyCancel

So many elements collided into wonderful perfection that was Anne Marie & Paul’s wedding. A bride with exquisite taste, sweet demeanor and flexible beyond belief (not physically, haha)? CHECK. A groom with a very present wit and charm? CHECK. A bride with attendants who weren’t afraid to shed tears or laugh out loud…but literally were GORGEOUS no matter their expressions? CHECK. A groom with a group of guys who were good sports and fun to banter with? CHECK.

That’s just the start. The weather was glorious. The ring-bearer is the bride & groom’s nephew, Evan..and he stole a piece of my heart. (Well, that’s kinda a lie because he already had that piece since he was born as he is the son of two of Neil’s and my closest friends, the sister of the groom.) One venue was reverently splendid (Redemptorist Church) and the other was freshly industrial (Evergreen Event space at the Firestone Building). A photo below shows just how proud Paul’s mom is of her only son as she looks at him up at the altar. With my own son now, I was sensitive to that and nearly cried myself. Gorgeous light was to be had during their portraits, and I distinctly remember being giddy around AM & Paul because they too were dizzy with love for the other. And remember their love story? If not, go peek at their engagement session post and catch up. It’s a good one!

The slideshow during the reception had everyone emotional all over again. The toasts were laced with sentiment and inside jokes. And Anne Marie is such a darling crier. And Paul is such a darling tear-wiper-away-er. 😉 Oh, gotta shout out to the caterer, Shining Star… The food was scrumptious and perfect for refueling. Paul’s family is Italian so there was an assortment of Italian cookies that AM & Paul walked around with while they visited with guests. I thought that was such a great idea to offer yummies AND hugs.

I love when brides and grooms step away from the expected. AM & Paul chose to forgo (that word always makes me think of the Bachelor/ette TV Series…who’s with me!? haha) the bouquet/garter belt toss and instead had an anniversary dance off. The couple left standing as the longest-to-be-married earned the mini floral arrangement and a round of much-earned applause.  The winners were the groom’s grandparents…married for over 60 years!!! OMG! That’s longer than my parents have been alive!

Judging from the way everyone tore up the dance floor, it was clear that their families and friends were only too happy to celebrate their love and support for the couple. AM & Paul’s wedding also oozed with one quality that is so THEM. It was COOL. It just felt like anyone who was there (including me, who is so UNCOOL other days)  was immediately cooler for being associated with the wedding. But I’m not talking about the kinda cool of popular kids who were unapproachable and pretentious. I’m talking about the ones who everyone liked…who you wanted to be around…who you wanted to have their style, and the ones who weren’t above telling you how to get it. 😉  (Rumor is AM helps all her friends with their fashion sense because she just has a knack for knowing what goes well with occasions and outfits.) AM & Paul et al are CLASSY individuals through and through. LOVE THEM!

A big thank you to my assistant, Ashley Keith. And also to Gina & Zach and Kate & Jeff for providing evidence for why AM & Paul should book with me. And to both of your families for making us feel like way more than hired help. 😉 And lastly…thank you, Anne Marie and Paul. You two are so incredibly fun to be around and I’m so glad that this isn’t the last time I will see you since our circles overlap. I know for a fact that you are a wonderful aunt/uncle to lil’ Evan, and a great sister and brother to your ever-growing family. And judging from those with whom you choose to surround yourself, it’s also pretty apparent that you’re good at the whole friendship thing. I can’t wait to watch you master these new roles you’ve stepped into–that of husband and wife. You’re going to nail it! Hugs to both of you!!!

So they might not be able to stay away mostly because they have churned out two DARLING girls who just HAVE to have their first years documented… but I’m Oh-so-glad cuz I’m a wee bit in love with them.

For this session, they wanted to go urban. Urban sounds awesome…but there of course are always challenges when bringing young ones onto a concrete playground. Both Kate and Adelyn were a tad on the clumsy side and might have suffered mild bumps or bruises from playing on cement and gravel. But what I love about their parents is that they were so cool about it. No big deal was made of them falling down… and we were able to continue on! Hooray!

Adelyn is at the age where she’s independent and wants to explore and has a hard time being persuaded to do anything else. Kate, on the other hand, was at the age that I love the most because where we placed her, she stayed put… and then turned on the charm. To her daddy’s chagrin, she ROCKED that bow on her head. I found myself alternating between giggles and audible sighs at all her expressions…she stole the show in her frills.

Once again, this was another fun session with a family I’ve come to adore both in front of the lens and beyond. 🙂

Enjoy some of MY faves from this family photo session in Kansas City’s Crossroad’s district.

This post is going to show you how behind I am in blogging… it’s from early August. I keep up with weddings for the most part, but I am so sorry about other sessions! ha

Anyway…this is Kim and Mike. They are pretty darn cool…even in the scorchingly humid temps that were present at their session. I was so excited that they picked Antioch Park for their engagement session because I shoot there a lot for fam sessions etc, but have always wanted to do an engagement session there.

If you looked at Mike and were to guess his occupation, you might actually guess that he’d be involved in sports in some way. And you’d be right. He has a really cool gig, actually…he’s the Recruiting Coordinator, Defensive Line Coach and Academics Coordinator for Emporia State University!

Their love story begins in 2009… well, their STORY begins in 2009. Kim worked at Dairy Queen and let’s just say Mike had an affinity for ice cream. Every Sunday evening. (My parents eat ice cream on Sundays as their ritual too, Mike! So they totally get it! 😉 )  So yes, small talk through a drive-thru window one night a week for nearly a year. In April of 2010, Kim went out with some friends to the same bar that Mike and his buddies were chilling out. Turns out, Mike was pals with one of Kim’s and with some liquid courage, Mike was able to go a bit beyond the usual banter with Kim. And a few nights later, he called Kim to go on a real date!

Kim jokes that she knew Mike was the one when she found out he was a pretty good cook. (She actually cites his ability to SHOW her he loves her so easily and that sealed the deal for her.) Mike, however, gives majors props to Kim because she handles his ups and downs of football season like a champ. (Gosh, there are soooo many sports pun(t)s we could make in this blog post, but I’m going to prevent you all from penalizing me (ha, I couldn’t help it!!) and continue on.)

Their engagement story made me giggle in the way that Mike tells it in his own words:

When I was thinking about proposing I really wanted to do something surprising. I had always wanted to incorporate Morgan, the friend that introduced us at the bar. So I set up a trip to San Antonio where Morgan lives, for Spring break because Kim had always wanted to go see her but never had the chance. I had planned on asking her on while we were down there on Saturday evening but that was St. Patrick’s Day. The Riverwalk was pack and many obstacles deterred my plan. So I then had to tell Morgan the plan, which is never a good idea, and she was now in on the festivities. I had been asking to get some cowboy boots so Morgan helped me get back down to the Riverwalk to look for boots. Therefore Kim didn’t clean up at all and she was wearing gym clothes, which I thought was perfect! Kim went along with the idea of boots and we were off. It was Sunday morning around 11:00 AM and there we were walking along the Riverwalk. I had never been more nervous than I was at this moment. There was a landing that looked out onto the River that I had spotted the day before. So I guided Kim up the stairs and to the landing using a BS excuse that she bought. At that point I couldn’t stop shaking and was kind of stuck. Luckily Kim noticed a squirrel that came pretty close to and she knelt to pet the thing. “Who pets a squirrel, RIGHT?” haha, but it saved me!! She then turned around and I went down onto my knee and asked her the famous question, “Will you marry me?” At this point usually you will get an answer but Kim only kept saying, “Are you kidding me right now?” over and over. I stayed on my knee for about 20 seconds before she finally said yes and I stood up with a huge sigh of relief and we then hugged!!! The best part of it was that we were able to get it on video because Morgan and her boyfriend were there to record it all!!!

They are getting hitched in Emporia next June,, and I’m already looking forward to spending some time with these two again! Here are some of my faves from their session. 🙂
