Just in time for Back To School days…  together with Jennifer Pestinger from Belle & Bows event planning, Darbi G. Photography is holding a themed mini-session in mid-September. Limited spots available! More details are on this flier, BUT…if you book a session, you’ll be entered to win a FREE stylized session in the spring with Darbi G and Belle & Bows. a stylized session means that Jennifer & I will work together to create a setting for you and your family, with props and decor and extensive wardrobe guidance. Think in terms of a catalog shoot… it’ll be a session that will look like you belong in a magazine! 🙂 Details to come!

But for now…the themed mini-session is LIL’ CAMPERS! The session fee includes up to 2 siblings (all must be able to sit unassisted). We’ll take a few pics in the camping setting as well as some traditional portraits in the “back to school” vein.

WARNING: a two-session post! To see how much a baby can change in their first year… keep scrolling. Because Baby Alice is no longer a newborn, and we’ve already done TWO of the three sessions included in the baby’s first year plan.

For the first, most recent session… here are Alice’s 7-month photos.

Gardens. Flowers. A spring day. It doesn’t get much better than that.
Or maybe it does when you add in a beyond-cute lil’ girl and a family full of love.
This is the 2nd session in the L family’s SMILESTONE COLLECTION (which is my baby plan package). Baby Alice made me so happy because she worked that camera… and hearing her mom’s squeals of delight over my shoulder further inspired me. haha
It was an overcast day, which usually worries parents because they are so fond of golden light images… but let me assure you… cloudy isn’t a bad thing. The colors are more vibrant and the angles are more flexible.
It makes me a bit sad to think the next time I shoot Alice and her darling family, she will have lived a full year of life! Time goes oh-so-fast and I just want it to stop long enough to smell the roses… a perfect sentiment for a photos in a rose garden, right?
Jamie & Neal… once again… here is your family!

And as promised, here are the images from the first session where I met Alice in all her nearly-bald glory. She one me over…and her two puppy sisters did too! I love shooting newborn sessions in the client’s home because no matter where the family moves in life, or how the home changes, they will have these images to look back on and reflect on this very special time in their lives. I know that I miss my old home solely because of the memories made there with our son. And I’m glad we had our own in-home photo sessions taken for us.

Anyway…ready to see Alice before she got the chubby cheeks you  just want to squish, but when she still had the smirk and twinkle in her eyes? Here you go! Newborn Alice…

Dear Morgan & Nick.

You are awesome.

Love,

Darbi

Just kidding. I have more to say. DUH.  So… it’s more like:

Dearest Morgan & Nick,

Your wedding was amazing. Simply put. I knew going into it would be though. After hanging out with you during your country engagement session last summer, I knew your wedding would meet all of my high expectations.

Morgan, you have great taste. In style…in picking a handsome, sweet and loving life partner….and in names for the two pups who couldn’t be with their parents as they legally united….and of course, in wedding photographers. HAHAHA 😉

From the dress (holy beautiful! Wait till you see it, blog readers!!) to the color palette of springy and flirtatious creams, pinks and greens, to your flower choices and overall wedding vision, everything came together in such a romantic, vintage-yet-modern, classic-but-FUN way. I knew that would be the case since you had one of the best wedding-planning teams in Kansas City (Hitched Planning + Floral) to bring to life what you saw in your mind’s eye.

I could eat your bouquet. The same part of my brain that goes cuckoo for darling babies also goes a bit wackadoo for luscious florals. The refreshing pinks and greens….the peonies, roses and ranunculus and the rest of the blooming goodness…truly set the mood for the day. When combined with the geometric gold centerpieces at the reception, my camera licked its lips and then swallowed whole. THANK YOU.

Let’s move on to the people. You chose such a good handful of guys and gals to stand beside you. Every one of your friends was so fun, so sweet and to top it off–quite easy on the eyes. At one point, I overheard you, Morgan, tell Nick, “Our wedding party is really good looking.”  I couldn’t agree more. I was quite impressed to hear how easy-going you’ve proven to be through the process, too, Morgan. You are down-to-earth.. full of energy, but so cool with anything that got tossed your way. That is my kind of bride. For example, blog readers, as picture-perfect as the bridesmaids look below in their cream Alfred Sung gowns, the color was not Morgan’s original choice. She had to alter her dress selection once she learned her sister, her matron of honor, would be very pregnant on the wedding day. And (correct me if I am remembering this wrong) because of the late notice to change the dresses, cream was one of the only choices left. Can I just say how absolutely stunning they turned out? It is such an uncommon hue for bridesmaid dresses, but you didn’t let your fear of not standing out become a problem. Instead..you let the ladies rock it. and Rock it they did. All of them looked so feminine and fresh. You STILL stole the show. But they sure as heck weren’t far behind. Selfishly, I was more than excited, too!

Sorry, Nick–Have I talked to much about girly things? Let me change that. … FOOTBALL!! BEER!!!! BURPING!! Just kidding. But for real. Your smile and your quick laugh and your relaxed and friendly conversational skills…you were so easy to work with. You make others laugh and you find humor in others. No wonder you smile a lot!! I never got the feeling that you wanted to rush through what typically isn’t the groom’s favorite part of the day. And your friends were the same way. It was clear they were game for whatever the most important dude on the ranch wanted. (Or maybe what Morgan wanted. hahaha) At the risk of sounding creepy….I enjoyed watching you watch Morgan. Your eyes would get a twinkle in them and your smile would slowly grow. You clearly are smitten to your core with her beauty…her wit…and her ability to be the only one dancing on a limo bus, in her own little world, without a care but with LOTS of happiness exuding from within. 😉

From beginning to end, Grace and I were so thrilled to be a part of the day. I was so pumped to go home and edit your images to relive it all and to see what I already knew would be stunning pics thanks to all of the above. I have some other notes about what I loved sprinkled throughout the post, but I should probably cap it off so we can present the world with some of my faves!

But know this: I’m grateful to no end that you’ve entrusted me with capturing the day that kicks off the most important chapter in your lives. I do so hope to work with you all again! Thanks to Blaire & Austin for referring you two my way!

xo,

Darbi

  • Kayla - Our daughter the flower girl aka Twirly Carly thought you were great! She told me that “the picture lady was nice and not bossy and let me spin a lot and read books with Libby.” Not a bad review by a 4 year old. Thank you for being so good with her.ReplyCancel

  • Piper - What an absolutely lovely wedding (and couple!) – I LOVE everything about this wedding. Especially seeing our friends, The Photo Bus, make an appearance!ReplyCancel

I kicked off my wedding season with the best kind of wedding to kick off the season with–a fun, vibrant, romantic and beautiful one!  (I recently did their engagement photos at Loose Park in Kansas City, so they might look familiar.)   I’m attempting a  new format this year. Because my logo is a love letter, because I truly believe my photography is like a love letter to my wonderful clients, I thought I’d try to carry that feeling to the blog too. We’ll see how it goes…sometimes, it might not work out as I might have things to say that don’t fit in the epistolary format (I learned THAT term in college. haha) There will be a few deviations along the way, but here we go!

Dear Kate & Tom,

What I loved most about your day was that I smiled genuine smiles because when you both were together, there was a zip of electricity in the air. You know, the kind that makes onlookers a bit jealous, but also happy that two people can be that much in love. Your friends were all so much fun to hang with and the bridesmaids look marvelous in their black dresses, holding the simple, yet ever-beautiful bouquets of purple and white calla lilies. {And what a feat to have a friend who could make magic with the flowers! Impressive!!!!}

One of my favorite moments of the day was when you, Kate, had a first glance with your dad and three brothers. I have a brother myself…and sometimes wish I would have done this, though I’m not sure he’d have been as emotionally laudatory as your brothers were. Their expressions really made me choke up! {And it was a bonus here to meet the celebrity bro. Forgive me for talking to readers for one second in the middle of your letter… but if the illustrious-haired brother looks familiar to you, you might recognize him from ABC FAMILY’S  The Fosters or MTV’s Finding Carter…Alex Saxon. On screen he is a refreshingly endearing actor and in the flesh, he proved to be  humble, gracious and tolerant of my tiny bit of star-struckedness…} Anyway, back to you lovebirds…

The portrait session with you both was inspirational. As you showed me during your engagement session a few weeks ago, you two have a chemistry that is palpable. Thank you for not hesitating to let it ride on camera. I hope that with your openness and trust in me, that I was able to deliver to you photos that will help rekindle any flickering flames in the future. May these images bring you back to those moments in time, in a grassy patch in downtown Kansas City or on the rooftop with the cityscape behind you, among the bustle of urban life and in front of a sleepy transient watching us from the alley, when the only thing you two were focused on was one another. THAT is love. THAT is what will get you through the bumps ahead–the moments when you only have eyes for one another.

Your reception was equal parts romantic and glamorous, without taking on the haughty air. What fun it was to watch you two sway and spin in one another’s arms during your first dance to the ironically named I Don’t Dance by Lee Bryce. Those who were watching you two were smiling, myself included.

Now that you’re back from your honeymoon, I hope the chapter before you excites you both. I truly am grateful that my former clients, Molly & Travis, sent you my way. Thank gosh for dental school pals with good taste, eh? 😉  {thank you, Molly & Travis!!!!!}  So here’s to the future for you both–may you always have something to smile about, may your smile always be shiny, bright and clean, and may you never forget what I’ve taught you about looking for good light (ha!) or take for granted the truly special relationship that you have with one another. xo to you both…and to your families and friends!!
